Furthermore, the Air-Rail Connectivity Options will allow travelers to earn frequent flyer miles on train journeys, enhancing the appeal of combined air-rail travel.

Star Alliance has partnered with Austria’s ÖBB to enhance Air-Rail Connectivity Options for travelers. This collaboration enables 25 member airlines to integrate Railjet services, connecting Graz, Linz, Salzburg, and Innsbruck with global destinations.

Federal Minister for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure Peter Hanke praised the initiative, stating, “This partnership exemplifies seamless mobility integration, benefiting tourism, economy, and society.” The Air-Rail Connectivity Options aim to simplify travel, offering eco-friendly alternatives for long-distance journeys.

Star Alliance CEO Theo Panagiotoulias highlighted the benefits, saying, “Customers can now travel from Singapore to Salzburg with a single ticket, switching from flight to rail at Vienna Airport.” Additionally, this integration ensures smoother transitions and greater convenience for passengers.

ÖBB CEO Andreas Matthä added, “This partnership makes global travel more accessible and sustainable, reducing reliance on cars.”

The partnership builds on ÖBB and Austrian Airlines’ AIRail initiative, launched in 2014, which already connects major Austrian cities to Vienna Airport. Meanwhile, the Star Alliance Intermodal Partnership model ensures streamlined booking, check-in, and loyalty benefits for customers.

By March 2025, Austrian Airlines will celebrate 25 years of Star Alliance membership. Currently, 16 member airlines operate at Vienna Airport, offering over 1,300 weekly flights to 135 destinations. Consequently, this expansion underscores Star Alliance’s commitment to innovative, sustainable travel solutions.
