FAAN Reactivates Runway 18L/36R After Aircraft Overshoot Incident

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) reopened Runway 18L/36R at 19:58hrs following the Dana Air incident earlier today. The runway closure was due to the overshot landing of Dana Air aircraft 5N-BKI.

Mrs. Obiageli Orah, FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs & Consumer Protection, stated that the emergency response team took immediate actions to evacuate and recover the aircraft. They then conducted comprehensive clearing operations to remove any Foreign Object Debris (FOD) that could pose a safety risk to flights. Joint inspections conducted by FAAN’s Operations division and the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) confirmed the safety of the runway.

All this after the Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau conducted its investigation around the site. FAAD to ensure it did not contaminate the incident site.

Efforts focused on cleaning the mud to quickly reopen Runway 18L/36R for operations despite its significant presence.

FAAN expressed gratitude to passengers, airline partners, and stakeholders for their patience, understanding, and cooperation during the temporary closure. The airport manager sincerely apologized for any inconvenience caused by the incident.
