Professional training has received a major boost following a landmark agreement between key aviation institutions in Nigeria. The Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Professor Charles Anosike, formalised a strategic partnership with the Rector of the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT), Dr Danjuma Ismaila. The Memorandum of Understanding was signed at NiMet headquarters in Abuja.
The agreement reflects a shared commitment to strengthening professional training, capacity development, and service delivery across aviation and meteorological sectors. Meanwhile, both institutions pledged to deepen technical collaboration for improved operational standards. Therefore, the partnership is expected to enhance workforce competence and regulatory compliance nationwide.
Under the framework, both parties will collaborate in the use of training facilities and advisory support for aviation programmes. In addition, specialised long- and short-term courses will be delivered to NiMet personnel. The arrangement also includes staff exchange initiatives and joint professional training programmes designed to meet global standards.
The MoU further permits the use of NiMet’s Training School in Oshodi, Lagos, for ICAO-compliant aviation courses. This strengthens professional training delivery while aligning Nigeria’s system with global benchmarks set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Consequently, personnel development will reflect international best practice in aviation safety and meteorology.
Key focus areas include aviation operations management, safety management systems, crisis coordination, and aviation security. The collaboration will also address air navigation systems and airport operations. Meanwhile, both institutions will jointly organise programmes such as Diploma training in Aviation Meteorology to expand specialised professional training pathways.
Professor Anosike reaffirmed NiMet’s commitment to continuous human capital development. He stressed that sustained investment in professional training and institutional partnerships remains essential for operational excellence. Furthermore, he noted that technical collaboration supports safe and efficient air navigation across Nigeria’s airspace.
Dr Ismaila emphasised NCAT’s readiness to provide structured aviation expertise and instructional support. He observed that professional training remains central to strengthening Nigeria’s aviation value chain. Therefore, the partnership positions both institutions to deliver measurable improvements in safety, efficiency, and service quality.
This agreement marks another strategic step in advancing Nigeria’s aviation ecosystem. By prioritising professional training, both agencies reinforce national objectives for safety, resilience, and global competitiveness.
