The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has signed a groundbreaking memorandum of understanding (MoU) with MTN and Tomorrow.io to develop a Digital Climate Advisory Services (DCAS) System. This partnership aims to deliver location-specific, actionable weather advisories to farmers in Nigeria through mobile SMS, ensuring timely and localized information for improved agricultural productivity. With a focus on enhancing climate resilience, this initiative aligns with the United Nations’ goal of early warning systems for all and supports Nigeria’s food security agenda.

At the MoU signing ceremony held at NiMet Headquarters in Abuja, the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Professor Charles Anosike, emphasized the partnership’s strategic importance. He noted that the collaboration with MTN, Nigeria’s leading telecommunications provider, and Tomorrow.io, a global leader in advanced weather intelligence, underscores the shared commitment to leveraging technology for societal benefits. “The primary goal of this partnership is to provide localized, timely weather advisories to boost agricultural resilience and productivity,” he explained, highlighting its alignment with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s food security agenda.

Professor Anosike further elaborated that MTN and Tomorrow.io were chosen for their sectoral leadership and expertise. He welcomed MTN’s CEO, Karl Toriola, along with key officials Shoyinka Shodunke and Tobechukwu Okigbo, as well as the Tomorrow.io team, to the event. “This collaboration goes beyond agriculture—it opens up the business potential of climate science to the private sector, fostering innovation and economic growth,” he said, expressing optimism about the project’s transformative impact on Nigeria’s economy.

Responding to NiMet’s remarks, MTN CEO Karl Toriola reaffirmed the company’s commitment to supporting government initiatives and delivering impactful solutions. He expressed optimism about the partnership’s potential to revolutionize the agricultural sector, emergency management, and public welfare. “We are deeply grateful to NiMet for trusting MTN with this critical initiative, which aligns with our mission to improve the lives of Nigerians through technology,” Toriola stated.

Similarly, Dr. Henry Onyemachi, Managing Director of Tomorrow.io, praised NiMet’s leadership under Professor Anosike, describing the MoU as the culmination of a progressive, year-long journey. He emphasized the project’s alignment with President Tinubu’s focus on food security, noting that the DCAS platform would play a pivotal role in supporting farmers and mitigating climate-related challenges. “This partnership represents a significant step toward sustainable development and enhanced climate resilience in Nigeria,” Onyemachi said.

Under the MoU, NiMet, MTN, and Tomorrow.io will collaboratively develop, deploy, and test the DCAS platform to provide real-time, weather-based advisories. Farmers across the country will receive these updates via SMS, ensuring accessibility and inclusivity. This innovative system aims to equip farmers with actionable insights, enabling them to make informed decisions and adapt to changing climatic conditions.

In conclusion, this strategic partnership between NiMet, MTN, and Tomorrow.io marks a new era in climate science applications for Nigeria’s agricultural sector. By harnessing the power of technology and collaboration, the initiative is set to enhance food security, support economic growth, and build climate resilience across the country. The Digital Climate Advisory Services (DCAS) System will not only benefit farmers but also contribute significantly to the broader goal of sustainable development in Nigeria.
