The Director General of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Professor Charles Anosike, has reaffirmed that the agency’s partnerships with universities will enhance farming in Nigeria.
Speaking at the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Taraba State University on February 13, 2025, Anosike highlighted how university collaborations enhance weather and climate data collection. He stated, NiMet’s network of university partners is growing. This expands our access to weather and climate data, improving forecast accuracy. Ultimately, local farmers and other users benefit.
He further assured that NiMet would monitor the implementation of these MoUs to ensure all parties fulfill their commitments.
In response, Professor Sunday Paul Bako, Vice Chancellor of Taraba State University, emphasized the importance of the partnership. He noted that the university’s departments of Geography, Agriculture, and Ecotourism would gain valuable insights. “With NiMet’s data, we can promote sustainable farming and climate-smart practices through our agricultural extension programs,”Bako added.
The four-year renewable MoU aims to enhance meteorology, climatology, and climate change research in Nigeria. It will also strengthen data-driven decision-making for weather-dependent sectors. It will further enhance farming in Nigeria.
