Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo says the first consignment of E-gates are due in Nigeria on Tuesday to be deployed soon. Similarly, Ojo says with the deployment, Nigerians have no business with Immigration officers unless they are persons of interest.
The Minister spoke at the commissioning of the renovated E-Arrival of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport(MMIA), Lagos.Â
According to the Minister, “ The E-gates have arrived in Nigeria. The first consignment will arrive Nigeria on Tuesday for the international airports. The first batch will be for Abuja, the others will come to Lagos, PortHarcourt, Kano and Enugu.â€
He commended the Aviation Minister for the collaboration as both ministries need to work together to get it done.
E-gates are Automated Border Control(ABC) systems or automated self-service barriers which use data stored in a chip in biometric passports along with a photo or fingerprint taken at the time of entering the E-Gates to verify the passport holder’s identity.
Also speaking at the event, the Comptroller General of NIS, Adepoju Wura-Ola said Nigerians are witnessing the effectiveness of collaboration. She commended the Comptroller MMIA Command, Adeola Adesokan for her efforts in gathering willing stakeholders to invest in the airport.Â
She said that the ambience of the E-Arrival is the product of collaborative efforts.
She thanked NNPC /SNEPCO for their support, adding that this is just the beginning , as according to her more will come.
Comptroller Immigration, MMIA, Adeola Adesokan said the journey has been one of collaboration with partners. She said the Lagos Airport is the busiest gateway in Nigeria and so cannot be abandoned.
She explained the painstaking process of getting partners to invest in the nation’s facilities, especially the airport.
