The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau celebrates its acceptance into the Marine Accident Investigators’ International Forum solidifying its global presence.
Founded in 1992, MAIIF is a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing maritime safety and preventing marine pollution.
The NSIB, established under the NSIB Act 2022, investigates accidents and serious incidents in various transportation modes in Nigeria.
The Bureau’s fundamental objective is to enhance transportation safety by determining the causes of accidents and providing safety recommendations.
NSIB’s induction into MAIIF marks a significant achievement, positioning it for greater success in maritime investigations. Similarly, this reinforces Nigeria’s premier status in Africa for transportation accident investigations.
With over 31 member countries spanning the globe NSIB becomes the second African member after Capo Verde.Â
Director-General Engr Akin Olateru emphasizes that this admission ensures the nation’s access to international collaboration. This is similar to the benefits gained from other organizations like ICAO, BAGAIA and AfCAC in the aviation sector.
Olateru anticipates that NSIB’s membership in MAIIF will enhance the nation’s maritime safety, aligning investigations with global standards.Â
Joining forums like MAIIF allows for the exchange of information, knowledge, and ideas, a positive step for the nation, according to Olateru.Â
The induction reflects NSIB’s commitment to continuous improvement and cooperation in advancing safety in the transportation sector.
