Ibom Air’s capacity recorded a boost as it recently took delivery of its pre-announced Airbus A220-300 from Maastricht Airport in the Netherlands. Eyewitnesses confirmed the aircraft arrived last Saturday and has already begun operating the airline’s route network. The aircraft, registered as 5N-CDB, was purchased from Carlyle Aviation Partners to end temporary leasing arrangements. Its acquisition significantly boosts Ibom Air’s capacity and meets growing demand.
In October 2021, the sub-national carrier ordered 10 Airbus A220-300 aircraft, receiving the first in November 2023. However, this aircraft, 5N-CDB, was not part of that original order. Instead, it was a separate transaction aimed at enhancing the airline’s capacity. Read Also: Ibom Air Adds A220-300 to Expand Fleet
A statement by the airline in July confirmed that this aircraft’s arrival brings Ibom Air’s fleet of A220s to 11, pending the delivery of nine more units. Nigerian banks are increasingly embracing aircraft financing, with Fidelity and Union Banks financing this purchase. Fidelity Bank served as the majority partner.
The quiet entry of this new aircraft into the market addresses the capacity gap observed in the Nigerian aviation sector. Reports indicate that Nigeria has fewer aircraft than needed, so Ibom Air is actively seeking market opportunities to increase its fleet.
