Hurricane in FAAN hits; as Directors, GMs redeployed, sacked

HURRICANE Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has hit as many officers of the agency have been affected in the massive shake up and redeployment and downgrades in the agency today had reported a planned restructuring in June this year following recommendations by the Presidential Committee chaired by the Head of Service, Winifred Ekanem Oyo-Ita, this may have come to play as it has been learnt that most of the improperly placed directors were relieved of their appointments

General Managers were not left behind as those also not properly placed in line with civil service rule have been demoted or asked to leave as at the time of filing this report no names have been mentioned.

Also it has been learnt that they may also be a public hearing soon after which some heads of parastatals may be asked to leave

According to the latest information gathered, the proper placement has been implemented by officials from the Federal Ministry of Transport.

As at 6 pm the officials of the Ministry of Transport were still in the board room compiling names, a situation that may have caused panic among FAAN workers.

There was tension around the agency and people were seen moving around with long faces.

This restructuring is coming on the heels of pressure from the unions who complained about inappropriate placements and other anomalies which indicated some senior management personnel who either did not have the qualifications or experience to man some of the sensitive positions they were thrust into.

The situation became more imperative after government discovered that the FAAN had no fewer than 40 General Managers, with more directorates created from existing directorates thereby raising overhead cost immensely.

Nigerianflightdeck can say for certain that some personnel who were brought into FAAN without qualification or required experience and yet were given key managerial position have been reviewed as a result of the work done by the committee.

Also it was learnt that acting General Manager in the Finance Department was taken down some notches from level 17 to level 10 and moved to the Information Communication and Technological department (ICT).

It was further learnt that through the review tagged ‘operation show your certificate’ that some personnel employed between 2012 and 2013 had just completed their National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) between2008 and 2010 and were given management positions without requisite experience.

Other affected officers were demoted from Grade Levels 17 and 16 to levels 10, 12 and 14.

Some keen observers are of the opinion that this exercise would not only lead to some job losses as some of the directorates created housed hundreds of redundant workers especially at the headquarters in Lagos while other stations suffered.

They are also of the opinion that this bold move by government will also lead to mass resignation especially as some of the positions were created as political favours.

  1. The Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) should not be left out, even the Commissioner/CEO the person of Dr. Felix L. Abali lacks the competence in managerial/leadership. Even those employed as stated in the report 2012-2013, all the newly employed in AIB are with little or aviation or accident investigation background, but where placed above those in the system who are well over fifteen years of both aviation and accident investigation background. The newly employed where sent to NCAT Zaria recently for A&P licence, some in ATC and Avionics. But still were placed in GL 16, GL 15, GL 14 the least is GL9. The AIB system is in comatose just like time bomb waiting to explode.

The Federal Ministry of Transport should look as well into AIB case and other agencies in the Ministry.
