Our strategy focuses on climate change mitigation and adaptation. We collaborate with stakeholders and leverage our network of stations to deliver impact-based forecasts and early warnings
Director General of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Professor Charles Anosike, has emphasized that strong leadership shapes team climate by influencing work environment, morale, and productivity. He highlighted that strong leaders foster collaboration, trust, and engagement by modeling constructive interactions.
Speaking at the African Leadership Persons of the Year 2025 event in Casablanca, Morocco, on Friday, March 21, 2025, Professor Anosike highlighted self-awareness in leadership. He noted that while weather changes daily, climate is experienced continuously. “Great leaders lead by doing,” he stressed.
He acknowledged the support of the Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo SAN, and his dedicated team. Anosike expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for entrusting him with NiMet’s transformation.
“I am privileged to lead NiMet, an agency with over 130 years of history since 1887 in Akassa, present-day Bayelsa State,” he said. He emphasized NiMet’s crucial role in sustainable agriculture by providing early warnings to farmers and promoting climate-smart practices.
Climate change exacerbates existing socio-economic challenges, disproportionately affecting vulnerable communities. He noted that NiMet supports disaster risk management through multi-hazard monitoring, alerts, and climate intelligence.
“Our strategy focuses on climate change mitigation and adaptation. We collaborate with stakeholders and leverage our network of stations to deliver impact-based forecasts and early warnings,” Anosike explained.
NiMet is engaging funding partners and the private sector to supplement government resources. Upgrading weather observation networks strengthens early warning systems and enhances preparedness.
“A climate-proof economy ensures sustainability,” he said. “Our success lies in teamwork, stakeholder engagement, and collaboration. Leadership is not an individual property but an emergent property of the system.”
Professor Anosike is among this year’s African Leadership Persons of the Year award recipients. He will receive the African Public Sector Leadership Impact Award at the ceremony on Saturday, February 22, 2025.
