The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has inaugurated its Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU), reinforcing its commitment to integrity and accountability. The ACTU inauguration marks a decisive move to strengthen internal oversight and align operations with global best practices. This step underscores NiMet’s focus on transparency as a core institutional value, while positioning the body as a key driver of ethical compliance across the agency.

Speaking at the ceremony, Director General/CEO of NiMet, Professor Charles Anosike, described the ACTU inauguration as a strategic milestone. He noted that the initiative aligns with the agency’s 2026-2030 Strategic Plan. According to him, the plan is anchored on Integrity, Professionalism, Accountability, Commitment, and Excellence (I-PACE). Therefore, the unit is expected to serve as a critical mechanism for safeguarding institutional processes and promoting transparency.

Professor Charles Anosike emphasised that ACTU plays a preventive role against corruption while fostering a culture of accountability. He explained that the unit has been expanded from five to eight members to improve efficiency and inclusiveness. In addition, he stressed that ethical conduct must become a shared responsibility among staff. “The fight against corruption is collective, and ACTU provides the framework to sustain that effort,” he said.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, represented by Mr Olusegun Adigun, commended NiMet’s leadership. He praised the agency for strengthening its operations and institutionalising transparency measures. Furthermore, he called for deeper collaboration between NiMet and the ICPC to enhance accountability frameworks and public trust.

The ACTU inauguration also highlights Nigeria’s broader push for transparency across public institutions. Agencies such as the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission continue to work closely with MDAs to entrench accountability systems. Similarly, global bodies like the International Civil Aviation Organization advocate governance and compliance standards across aviation-related institutions, reinforcing the importance of ACTU-type frameworks.

Concluding the event, Director General/CEO of NiMet, Professor Charles Anosike, urged ACTU members to uphold the highest ethical standards. He charged them to carry out their responsibilities with diligence and professionalism. Moreover, he assured them of management’s full support in executing their mandate. The ACTU initiative, therefore, stands as a clear signal of NiMet’s dedication to transparency, accountability, and national development.
