His re-election extends his regional leadership role through 2029.
Abba won re-election at the 37th IFATCA Africa and Middle East Regional Meeting in Amman, Jordan. The meeting took place from October 26 to 30, 2026. His new tenure will run from 2027 to 2029, following his first election to the position in 2024.
Ahmad Abba Secures Second IFATCA Term
The re-election signals continued confidence from IFATCA member associations in Abba’s leadership. It also places a Nigerian aviation professional in a key regional position for another three years.
As Executive Vice President for Africa and the Middle East, Abba will coordinate with member associations, aviation authorities, international organisations and industry partners. His responsibilities include strengthening regional cooperation and promoting safe, efficient air navigation services.
In addition, his work will support aviation workforce development and the professional wellbeing of air traffic controllers. These priorities remain important as the region works to improve operational standards and strengthen aviation safety.
Abba Pledges Stronger Regional Cooperation
Speaking after his re-election, Abba thanked member associations for their confidence and support. He pledged to continue working with regional stakeholders to strengthen the federation and advance the interests of air traffic controllers.
“I am deeply honoured by the trust placed in me to continue serving the Africa and Middle East Region. I remain committed to working with our member associations and regional partners to strengthen IFATCA, support our air traffic controllers, and contribute to a safer, more resilient and sustainable aviation system.”
His statement highlights the importance of collaboration among air traffic controllers, regulators and other aviation stakeholders. Such cooperation supports the delivery of safe and reliable air navigation services across the region.
Ahmad Abba Brings Over 25 Years of Aviation Experience
Abba is a licensed air traffic controller with more than 25 years of aviation experience. He is also an International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)-certified instructor.
His professional background spans operational, safety, search and rescue, and regulatory functions. This experience provides a foundation for his work on regional aviation coordination and professional development.
At the NCAA, Abba leads regulatory oversight of aerodromes and airspace as Director of Aerodrome and Airspace Standards. His responsibilities also contribute to the development and regulation of Nigeria’s civil aviation sector.
Re-election Highlights Nigeria’s Aviation Influence
Abba’s second term represents a notable achievement for Nigeria’s aviation industry. It also underscores the role Nigerian professionals can play in shaping regional aviation cooperation and international standards.
During his 2027-2029 tenure, Abba will have another opportunity to strengthen engagement among air traffic controllers’ associations across Africa and the Middle East. His stated priorities include improving safety, supporting professional growth and building a more resilient aviation system.
The re-election therefore reinforces Nigeria’s representation within an international organisation dedicated to advancing the profession and interests of air traffic controllers.
