The Ghanaian envoy to Nigeria, His Excellency Sadiq Abdulai Abu, has commended United Nigeria Airlines (UNA) for its efficient service on the Accra-Abuja route.
The Ghanaian High Commissioner to Nigeria and Permanent Representative to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) made the commendation when a UNA delegation paid a courtesy visit to him at the Ghana High Commission in Abuja on September 10, 2026. The delegation, led by the airline’s Director of Administration, Mr Linus Awute, formally welcomed the envoy to Nigeria and conveyed the goodwill of the airline’s management and board.
The visit had added significance because the Ghanaian envoy’s first flight into Nigeria after resuming his diplomatic duties was aboard United Nigeria Airlines. The development also provided an opportunity for both sides to discuss stronger cooperation between the airline and the Ghana High Commission.
Ghanaian envoy commends United Nigeria Airlines
Speaking on behalf of the Executive Chairman, Professor Obiora Okonkwo, Awute conveyed UNA’s goodwill to the Ghanaian envoy.
He also reiterated the executive chairman’s longstanding relationship with the President of Ghana, John Mahama, while reaffirming UNA’s commitment to deepening the historic ties between Ghana and Nigeria.
Awute highlighted the strong Ghanaian presence within United Nigeria Airlines. He noted that a significant number of Ghanaian nationals are part of the airline’s workforce and play critical roles in its operational excellence and safety.
According to him, the presence of Ghanaian nationals within the airline reflects the enduring people-to-people relationship between both countries.
In his remarks, the Ghanaian envoy expressed appreciation for the visit and commended UNA for its service on the Accra route.
He also expressed interest in strengthening collaboration between the Ghana High Commission and United Nigeria Airlines.
The Ghanaian envoy informed the UNA delegation that Ghana will celebrate its 70th Independence Anniversary on March 6, 2027.
He invited United Nigeria Airlines to explore partnership opportunities around the commemorative activities.
The High Commissioner also requested that UNA consider a special corporate travel package for staff of the Ghana High Commission. In addition, he asked the airline to support arrangements for official cargo.
The UNA delegation received the requests positively and affirmed its readiness to explore areas of cooperation.
The requests could provide specific areas for the airline and the Ghana High Commission to work together ahead of Ghana’s anniversary celebrations.
Presenting a signature gift to the Ghanaian envoy, Awute reiterated United Nigeria Airlines’ commitment to the relationship between the airline and the Ghana High Commission.
He also restated the airline’s brand philosophy of “Flying to Unite.”
Awute said the airline would continue to leverage its connectivity between Ghana and Nigeria to advance diplomatic, economic, business, cultural and people-to-people ties.
The meeting therefore ended with both sides expressing readiness to explore further areas of cooperation.
For United Nigeria Airlines, the engagement provides an opportunity to deepen its relationship with the Ghana High Commission while supporting the existing connection between Accra and Abuja.
For the Ghanaian envoy, the meeting also provided an opportunity to acknowledge the airline’s service and identify areas where both sides can collaborate.
The engagement comes ahead of Ghana’s 70th Independence Anniversary in 2027, with corporate travel, official cargo and anniversary-related activities now identified as potential areas of cooperation.
