Management of Air Peace has denied reports of a tax suit involving its top executives, describing the claims as shocking. The airline said neither its Chairman nor Vice Chairman has received any official court summons. Therefore, it insisted that the narrative of ongoing legal proceedings lacks credibility.

The airline’s statement addressed allegations that its Chairman, Allen Ifechukwu Onyema, and Vice Chairman, Alice Ojochide Onyema, are subjects of a tax suit by the Lagos State Government. However, the company maintained that no formal notification has been received from any authority. It added that the claim of proceedings dating back to February raises serious questions.

Tax Suit Debunking

“We wish to state unequivocally that neither the Onyemas nor Air Peace has been served with any court summons,” the airline said. “The claim that legal proceedings have been ongoing without service is surprising and shocking.”

Meanwhile, the airline reaffirmed its compliance with all statutory obligations, including taxes. It stressed that both personal and corporate tax responsibilities have been fully met. In addition, the company stated that it operates within all applicable regulatory frameworks in Nigeria’s aviation sector.

“We maintain that all personal and corporate tax obligations have been duly met and remain up to date,” the statement added. “We are in full compliance with applicable laws and regulatory requirements.”

However, Air Peace acknowledged the possibility of discrepancies in tax computations. It expressed willingness to engage relevant authorities if required. Therefore, the airline signalled openness to dialogue in resolving any issues transparently.

“If there is any discrepancy in the computation of taxes, we remain open to engaging the Lagos State Government,” it said. “This is to review and reconcile any shortfalls in the interest of transparency and due process.”

The airline also highlighted its longstanding contributions to Nigeria’s aviation industry. It noted that its leadership has consistently demonstrated resilience and commitment to national development. Meanwhile, it emphasised that these values remain unchanged despite the current controversy.

Industry observers say the tax suit claims come at a sensitive time for Nigeria’s aviation sector. Airlines are grappling with rising operational costs and regulatory pressures. Therefore, reputational issues could further complicate business stability.

Air Peace, one of Nigeria’s largest carriers, reiterated that it remains focused on operations. It stressed that it will not be distracted from serving passengers. In addition, the airline underscored its commitment to professionalism and safety standards.

“We remain committed to the highest standards of professionalism,” the airline stated. “We will not be distracted from serving the flying public.”

For regulatory context, Nigeria’s aviation oversight falls under the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, which ensures compliance across the sector. As the situation develops, stakeholders will watch closely for any official clarification from the Lagos State authorities. However, for now, Air Peace maintains that the tax suit narrative remains unsubstantiated.
