Turkish Airlines has responded to recent picketing by the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) at Lagos and Abuja airports. The airline described the demonstrations as regrettable, noting ongoing dialogue with union representatives.

A statement from the airline reaffirmed that it operates in full compliance with Nigerian labour laws. “All disputes should be resolved through legal and discussion channels rather than disruptive protests,” the airline said.

Meanwhile, the airline committed to continue discussions with NUATE and other stakeholders to achieve a constructive resolution.

Background: Industrial Arbitration Panel Sparks Labour Standoff

The picketing followed an Industrial Arbitration Panel (IAP) Award on a trade dispute involving NUATE, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and Turkish Airlines. The panel addressed the dismissal of ten unionised employees.

Union members staged protests at airports, chanting slogans like “Turkish Airlines Enough is Enough” and “No to Unfair Labour Practice.”Some banners demanded the removal of the airline’s general manager in Nigeria.

The IAP determined the dismissals were procedurally wrongful, but reinstatement was impractical due to an irretrievable breakdown of trust. Instead, the tribunal ordered monetary compensation. The airline must pay all outstanding salaries and benefits from the date of dismissal, plus an additional sum equivalent to three months’ salary per affected employee.

Picketing Implications for Airline Operations

The standoff highlights the tension between enforcing arbitration rulings and maintaining stable operations. Airports witnessed sustained picketing, potentially affecting passenger movement.

Labour experts emphasise that compliance with arbitration awards is essential to protect workers’ rights while avoiding operational disruption. Turkish Airlines continues negotiations, balancing regulatory compliance with safety and service continuity.

Maintaining Industrial Harmony

Industry observers note that such picketing incidents stress the need for proactive engagement between airlines and unions. Constructive dialogue can prevent service disruptions and maintain public confidence.

NUATE leaders have insisted that adherence to the IAP Award is critical to securing fair treatment for workers and preserving industrial peace in Nigeria’s aviation sector.

Meanwhile, Turkish Airlines has pledged to respect the legal process while safeguarding passengers and staff. Both parties are expected to continue discussions to reach a resolution in the coming weeks.
