The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has renewed its call on employees nationwide to complete registration and select a preferred Health Maintenance Organisation, or HMO, under the National Health Insurance Scheme, reinforcing deliberate efforts to improve staff welfare while complying with Federal Government policy. The HMO initiative reflects FAAN’s growing emphasis on structured healthcare access as a core component of workforce wellbeing across its airports and administrative offices.
The directive was conveyed through an internal circular dated 13 January 2026 and signed by Director of Human Resources and Administration, Dr Emiola Luşman Olatunbosun, who also serves as Chairman of the FAAN NHIS-HMO Committee. The memo was circulated to the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, directors, regional general managers, airport managers, general managers, and all staff, ensuring the HMO message reached every operational level of FAAN.
According to FAAN, the Health Maintenance Organisation registration exercise follows the Federal Government of Nigeria’s requirement for all citizens to be enrolled under the National Health Insurance Scheme. However, management stressed that the programme is not merely about regulatory compliance. Instead, the HMO framework is designed to strengthen healthcare delivery for staff, reduce out-of-pocket medical expenses, and provide predictable access to quality medical services nationwide.
To support the process, FAAN introduced a dedicated digital portal that enables staff to select their preferred HMO with minimal administrative friction. Through this platform, employees are expected to choose one HMO from three approved providers, AXA Mansard, Leadway Health, and Avon Healthcare. The Authority explained that the centralised portal promotes transparency while ensuring every staff member actively participates in determining their healthcare provider.
The HMO selection is conducted through hmo.faan.gov.ng, which FAAN described as the official gateway for enrolment under the scheme. Management encouraged staff to familiarise themselves with the portal early, noting that the chosen HMO will directly influence the scope and efficiency of healthcare services available to employees once full NHIS implementation begins.
While the circular did not announce a specific deadline, FAAN clarified that the formal registration timetable by the National Health Insurance Authority will be communicated subsequently. This phased approach, according to management, allows staff sufficient time to understand their HMO options while preparing for nationwide enrolment under the health insurance framework.
The NHIS-HMO Committee further urged staff to prioritise the exercise, emphasising that early registration would help prevent disruptions to healthcare access during the transition period. Meanwhile, management directed that the memo be displayed on all FAAN notice boards, reinforcing internal communication and ensuring inclusiveness across airport locations.
FAAN’s renewed focus on healthcare mirrors broader welfare-driven reforms across Nigeria’s aviation agencies. Similar staff-centred initiatives on institutional reforms within the aviation sector, including workforce-focused policies aimed at strengthening operational resilience and service delivery.
The internal reference FAAN/W&MS/01/26 underscores FAAN’s alignment with national health policy reforms and its commitment to improving employee welfare. By digitising the HMO selection process, FAAN aims to reduce administrative delays, improve accountability, and deliver more dependable healthcare coverage for its workforce.
As FAAN continues to modernise internal systems, management reiterated that staff welfare remains central to organisational stability. The Health Maintenance Organisation programme, the Authority noted, is expected to enhance productivity, improve morale, and provide long-term healthcare security for employees across Nigeria’s airport network.
