Maiduguri Positioned as Growing Global Hub
Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Zulum, says the new Maiduguri International Airport gives the state a strong global advantage. He explained that the state is close to major regional and international cities.
“Maiduguri is located south of Lake Chad and close to the Sahara,” he said. He noted that the city borders Chad, Niger and Cameroon, which strengthens regional trade.
Zulum added that the airport offers short flight times to major destinations. “You can leave Maiduguri and reach Malaga in three and a half hours,” he said. “In three hours you can reach Jeddah. In two hours you can reach Sudan, and in another two hours Algeria.” He said these distances show strong aviation potential.
He described the upcoming commissioning by the President as a major step for the North-East.
“We have this opportunity to honour the President, the Minister of Aviation, the Managing Director of FAAN and our colleagues in NAMA, NCAA and others,” he said. He explained that their roles made the Maiduguri airport upgrade possible.
Maiduguri Gains Recognition as Secure Investment Base
Zulum urged local and foreign investors to consider Maiduguri, noting the city’s improved security. He said this stability will support long-term economic expansion.
“Maiduguri is more secure than Lagos and Abuja,” he said. “If you meet anyone from Maiduguri, you can walk together peacefully even at 3 a.m. Nobody will touch you.”
He stressed that safety and stability will help investors establish new businesses. Therefore, he encouraged stakeholders to take advantage of the new airport and the state’s improving business climate. He said the government is ready to support credible investors who come to Maiduguri.
Industrial Growth Strengthens Maiduguri’s Appeal
Zulum announced new industrial projects near the Maiduguri airport. He said the Federal Government approved an Agricultural and Intercontinental Trade Hub for the state. He explained that the hub will support major regional exports.
“We launched an industrial park a few days ago,” he said. “Commercial plastic pipes and other products are already being exported to neighbouring countries.”
He said more industries will open soon. In addition, he explained that the coming trade zone will boost cargo movement through new international airport designate. He said this will create more jobs and raise economic activity around the airport corridor. He noted that these efforts are part of a long-term industrialisation plan.
Zulum Restates Investment Call as Airport Nears Commissioning
Zulum again called on investors to explore opportunities in Borno State. He said the state will support investments in aviation, logistics and emerging industries. “Let me once again invite investors to come and invest in the aviation industry and other sectors,” he said. “We will create an enabling environment for investors to thrive.”
He also praised the FAAN Managing Director for supporting the airport upgrade. “I want to commend the Managing Director and all the good work he has been doing,” he said. He added that the airport will serve as a foundation for stronger economic growth across the region.
