In a landmark development for Nigerian aviation, Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Olubunmi Kuku, has been elected Vice President of ACI Africa. Her election was ratified at the 34th ACI Africa General Assembly in Lusaka, Zambia, positioning her as a permanent member of the ACI World Governing Board.
This achievement elevates her from her earlier role as Regional Advisor for Africa and cements Nigeria’s influence in the global aviation sector. With 56 member states under its umbrella, ACI Africa plays a pivotal role in advancing aviation interests across the continent.
Globally, the ACI World Governing Board represents 2,100 airports, comprising 814 members across 169 countries. By joining its permanent membership, Kuku will have direct input in shaping airport policies worldwide, while advocating for stronger African representation.
“Being elected as Vice President of ACI Africa is an incredible honor, one that I do not take lightly,” said Olubunmi Kuku. “I am committed to collaborating with my colleagues to ensure that our airports not only meet international standards for safety and efficiency but also serve as critical drivers of economic growth and connectivity for our nations.”
Kuku’s leadership has already sparked remarkable transformation within Nigerian airports. Her tenure at FAAN has been marked by phased infrastructure upgrades, renewed focus on passenger-centric operations, and compliance with global safety regulations. She has also pushed for sustainability initiatives, ensuring Nigeria’s aviation sector aligns with environmental goals.
Her broad background in finance and aviation equips her with the tools to confront pressing issues such as funding shortfalls, operational efficiency, and long-term sustainability.
Her new role within ACI Africa will allow her to champion solutions for challenges such as limited airport infrastructure, uneven connectivity, and the need for digital innovation.
Over the years, she has earned numerous awards that underscore her commitment to elevating aviation standards. Her focus on operational excellence and service quality has redefined Nigeria’s airport management, drawing attention from regional and global aviation stakeholders.
The election also strengthens Nigeria’s voice within global aviation bodies. According to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), African airports face critical gaps in infrastructure and financing. Kuku’s leadership within ACI Africa is expected to address these gaps while fostering partnerships with international bodies to secure sustainable growth.
As Vice President of ACI Africa, Kuku’s mandate will extend beyond advocacy. She will play a strategic role in ensuring airports across Africa remain competitive, efficient, and safe while supporting wider connectivity. Her success reflects not only personal achievement but also Nigeria’s determination to be at the forefront of global aviation progress.
With Kuku at the helm, the future of aviation in Africa looks promising, driven by collaboration, innovation, and a shared vision for excellence.
