The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the Women Farmers Advancement Network (WOFAN) have strategised to mitigate climate impact on Nigerian farmers. This partnership aims to address the challenges posed by climate disasters and improve agricultural productivity.
During a meeting hosted by the Director General of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, on 3rd March 2025, both organizations discussed actionable strategies. Prof. Anosike commended WOFAN for its impactful work since 1993. He highlighted their network of nearly 700,000 farmers and community-based agricultural projects.
“I commend WOFAN for their amazing work over the years,” said Prof. Anosike. “This partnership is one of my most important achievements due to its potential to boost agricultural yield in Nigeria.”
Prof. Anosike emphasized the importance of timely weather information for rain-fed agriculture. He noted that NiMet’s Seasonal Climate Prediction, unveiled in February 2025, aligns perfectly with WOFAN’s efforts. “Our work at NiMet won’t be complete if farmers don’t receive our information. This partnership ensures they get guidance to reduce damages, pests, and illnesses,” he added.
He also stressed the value of farmer feedback. “Interacting with farmers allows us to improve our services and better support their needs,” Prof. Anosike concluded.
In her response, WOFAN’s founder, Hajia Salamatu Garba, praised NiMet for its consistent release of weather and climate information. She acknowledged WOFAN’s reliance on NiMet data to address climate-smart agricultural issues.
“We have always received NiMet data indirectly, but this partnership ensures direct access,” Hajia Garba said. She expressed optimism about the collaboration’s potential to empower farmers, especially women and youth.
Both organizations agreed to formalize their partnership through a memorandum of understanding. This agreement will guide their efforts to provide farmers with accurate weather forecasts, training, and resources.
The collaboration between NiMet and WOFAN underscores their shared commitment to enhancing agricultural resilience and to mitigate climate impact. By working together, they aim to ensure food security and improve livelihoods for Nigerian farmers.
