“We’re building the future of travel services where payments, connectivity, and convenience all converge. With Univasa, we are solving a real problem many travellers face, staying connected easily once they arrive at their destination.”
Univasa has formed a Travel Data eSIM partnership with Kalabash54, a fintech subsidiary of the Wakanow Group, to support African international travellers. This collaboration delivers a new Travel Data eSIM solution designed to simplify mobile connectivity across borders without swapping SIM cards.
Now live on wakanow.com, the service allows travellers to access mobile data plans during the booking process. This removes the stress of purchasing SIM cards or paying roaming fees abroad. Customers can activate the service directly while finalizing flight and hotel bookings.
Speaking at a media briefing in Lekki Phase 1, Lagos, Chief Executive Officer Univasa, Ben Adeniyi, said the initiative aligns with the needs of modern travellers. “This partnership gives travellers access to high-quality, affordable Travel Data services in over 190 countries — all without swapping SIM cards. It’s seamless, secure, and exactly what modern travel requires,” he stated.
He added that teaming with Kalabash54 offers Univasa technical efficiency and strategic access. “Partnering with Kalabash54 gives us the right technology and distribution synergy to scale this service while delivering on our promise of innovation and mobility,” Adeniyi noted.
Through this partnership, Univasa powers the backend data infrastructure while Kalabash54 handles technology integration. According to the companies, the Travel Data eSIM is seamlessly embedded in Wakanow’s booking engine for real-time delivery and activation.
Kalabash54 Chief Executive Officer, Mr Ladi Ojuri, also highlighted the service’s value to African travellers. He said, “We’re building the future of travel services where payments, connectivity, and convenience all converge. With Univasa, we are solving a real problem many travellers face, staying connected easily once they arrive at their destination.”
Mr Ojuri further explained the broader vision behind the launch. “Our ambition is to deliver infrastructure that meets the African traveller at every step. This partnership is a win for the digitally savvy customer who expects everything, including Travel Data connectivity, to be handled before take-off,” he added.
The Travel Data eSIM partnership integrates Univasa’s global data network and eSIM API, ensuring fast, secure, and reliable service in over 190 countries. Users can now travel with confidence, knowing their data access will be seamless and uninterrupted.
This launch marks another step in Wakanow Group’s commitment to digital transformation within Africa’s travel tech ecosystem. Through Kalabash54, Wakanow Group, continues to innovate in customer experience by integrating flights, accommodation, payments, and now, Travel Data into one streamlined platform.
With the travel industry seeing increased demand for digital-first solutions, Univasa and Kalabash54 are working to keep pace with traveller expectations. Their partnership aims to meet the connectivity needs of Africans traveling internationally without added complications.
The strategic rollout signifies a growing trend among African tech firms to provide comprehensive, tech-enabled services tailored to local users. By eliminating traditional barriers like roaming fees and local SIM sourcing, the new offering reshapes what seamless travel means for African customers.
As more travellers seek smarter solutions, this initiative could pave the way for wider adoption of eSIM technology across the continent.
