United Nigeria Airlines has formally joined the Sabre global distribution system, a major step taken during a high-level event held in Nigeria. The deal, which took place with Sabre Central and West Africa, significantly boosts the airline’s ability to distribute tickets globally while preparing it to grow capacity by more than 2,000 seats in the coming year.

The Nigeria-based event featured Professor Obiora Okonkwo, Chairman of United Nigeria Airlines, who detailed the strategic importance of this new partnership. He emphasized that the decision aligns with the airline’s ambition to expand internationally and leverage technology to improve sales and service.

Speaking at the event, Professor Okonkwo noted that the Sabre platform will allow agents in over 200 countries to access the airline’s fares and inventory instantly. This real-time access removes previous constraints and opens up the Nigerian carrier to international markets.

“This puts us in a position where we can compete globally. It enables ticket sales in foreign exchange and simplifies our interline and co-sharing agreements. This is a game-changer for our operations,” Okonkwo said.

He revealed that integration with the Sabre global distribution system is a prerequisite for partnering with global carriers through interline and co-sharing arrangements. With the system now active, United Nigeria Airlines meets key global aviation requirements, including IATA protocols for billing and settlement.

The event in Nigeria served as a focal point, even as a separate announcement was made through Sabre’s global press channels abroad. However, the gathering in Nigeria offered direct insight into the airline’s growth plans, system flexibility, and the immediate operational benefits it expects.

Bobby Bryan, Sabre Corporation’s Director, Africa and Europe at the Nigerian event, confirmed that their system is equipped to support United Nigeria’s scaling plans. “As aircraft arrive and schedules are adjusted, the Sabre system reflects these changes live. Travel agents across the globe can access and sell those seats without delay,” Bryan explained. ” There are strong players here and United Nigeria has shown what the future can hold.”

The airline also plans to launch its first regional flight to Accra, Ghana, on August 25, 2025. Professor Okonkwo highlighted market research showing heavy traffic demand between Nigeria and Ghana as the basis for choosing Accra as the first destination. He confirmed the airline is designated for operations to countries including the United Kingdom, United States, United Arab Emirates, South Africa, and Senegal.

According to Executive Director/COO Mazi Osita Okonkwo, the integration enhances global visibility and supports broader distribution. “Our fares and products are now available to more customers than ever before. It’s a huge step in our growth strategy,” he said.

A Global Distribution System (GDS) is the underlying technology that powers bookings for airlines, hotels, car rentals, and travel agencies. It links suppliers to travel agents and online platforms like Expedia and Booking.com. Sabre is one of the largest GDS providers, alongside Amadeus and Travelport.

The Sabre system allows real-time access to United Nigeria’s inventory, supports seamless booking, and enables IATA-compliant payment processes. These features are essential for growing international airlines.

Vice President Airline Distribution EMEA for Sabre, Mr. Alessandro Ciancimino, expressed optimism about the partnership’s potential. “We are proud to support United Nigeria Airlines as they expand their reach. This is about building smarter, more agile distribution,” he stated.

President of Sabre Central and West Africa, Mr. Joshua Olowo, added that Sabre’s goal is to help local airlines succeed on a global stage. “With this partnership, United Nigeria Airlines can grow faster, access new revenue streams, and offer better travel experiences,” Olowo said.

United Nigeria Airlines now joins two other Nigerian carriers on the GDS platform, reinforcing its commitment to modernization and global competitiveness.

As new aircraft join its fleet, the Sabre system will instantly update seat availability, allowing the airline to maintain high responsiveness to market demand.

With the implementation of the Sabre global distribution system, United Nigeria Airlines has moved a step closer to becoming a truly global airline while retaining strong Nigerian roots. The event in Nigeria demonstrated not just the technological leap, but the strategic leadership guiding this bold expansion.
