The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has confirmed that suspected terrorists attack Kangiwa Border facilities and contractors in Kebbi State, resulting in significant casualties and infrastructure damage. This tragic incident, which occurred at approximately 7:20 PM on Friday, January 10, 2025, has heightened concerns over the safety of critical infrastructure in the region. The attack led to the deaths of four individuals, including a local watchman and three contractors, while immigration officers remained unharmed. However, substantial damage was inflicted on border facilities, challenging the restoration of operations and confidence in the area. 

Following the attack, the NIS issued a statement expressing deep sorrow for the loss of lives and reaffirmed its commitment to securing national borders. Deputy Controller of Immigration (DCI) KT Udo in a statement extended condolences to the grieving families while confirming that the Service is actively working with security agencies to identify and apprehend the perpetrators. “The Service is actively working alongside other sister security agencies to identify those responsible for these heinous acts and ensure they are brought to justice,” Udo stated. These measures highlight the NIS’s ongoing dedication to border security, which is critical to national stability.

As the investigation unfolds, the NIS has intensified efforts to fortify border facilities and collaborate with sister security agencies to prevent future incidents. This approach underscores the Service’s resolve to deter threats and strengthen its operational response capabilities. Officials have emphasized the importance of intelligence-sharing partnerships and improved security infrastructure to safeguard lives and property. These efforts aim to address vulnerabilities exposed during the suspected terrorists attack Kangiwa border.

The last notable attack on Immigration personnel occurred on an immigration checkpoint in Gwadabawa area, Ilela border of Sokoto in 2023. Two officers were killed leaving four seriously wounded. 

This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the need for heightened vigilance and sustained investment in border security infrastructure. While the loss of lives and damage is deeply regrettable, the Service remains steadfast in fulfilling its core mandate to protect Nigeria’s borders and contribute to the safety of the nation.
