The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has successfully revalidated over 200 aircraft marshallers to enhance safety and reduce apron-related incidents. Conducted in partnership with FCI International and the Centre for Technical Development, the training programme was implemented across various airports nationwide. The **competent revalidation training programme** focused on addressing gaps in technical expertise and aligning operations with Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) advisory circular NCAA-AC-ARD049 on Airside Safety Management.

Aircraft marshallers play a vital role in ensuring the safe guidance of aircraft during ground movement and taxiing operations. Speaking during a session held at the Port Harcourt International Airport, FAAN’s Director of Human Resources, Dr. Emiola Luqman, highlighted the significance of the initiative. He emphasized that FAAN is committed to bridging technical training gaps to ensure safe and secure air transport services, especially during the busy Yuletide period. “This programme demonstrates our determination to enhance operational efficiency and safety across all airports under FAAN’s jurisdiction,” Luqman remarked.

Adding further insight, the Managing Director of FCI International and training coordinator, Mr. Fortune Idu, explained that this edition of the programme went beyond traditional marshalling signals. He stressed the importance of minimizing apron-related incidents, describing it as essential to an effective airport management system. “We assessed apron-related work hazards and introduced innovations like a new logging system to make signalmen safer and more efficient,” Idu stated. The competent revalidation training programme also reviewed existing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to align them with global best practices.

Participants of the training expressed their gratitude to FAAN management for addressing their needs and providing essential tools for their duties. They also requested expanded career progression opportunities and additional technical training. One participant noted, “This training has given us the confidence to perform our roles more effectively, but we hope FAAN considers more professional growth opportunities for marshallers.”

Responding to these requests, Mr. Idu revealed his advocacy for a professional marshallers’ consultative body to ensure better career development and industry standards. He noted that this proposal has already been presented to the NCAA and supported by Acting Director General Capt. Chris Najomo. “Captain Najomo’s vision for an inclusive aviation system is commendable, and his confirmation as substantive DG is essential for sustaining these developmental efforts,” Idu added.

In conclusion, the revalidation of over 200 aircraft marshallers marks a critical step in improving airside safety at Nigerian airports. With continued support from FAAN and industry stakeholders, these efforts will strengthen the operational framework and foster a safer aviation environment.
