The management of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and agency-based unions have reached an agreement to postpone their planned strike action indefinitely. During a crucial media briefing in Abuja, union leaders explained that the decision followed extensive negotiations focused on workers’ welfare and key operational concerns. This development ensures continued industrial harmony while discussions on pending issues progress constructively.

During the deliberations, both parties signed an agreement outlining actionable timelines for addressing workers’ demands in a structured manner. NiMet’s Director General, Prof. Charles Anosike, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to prioritizing staff welfare within feasible economic conditions. He emphasized that the postponement allows management to continue its engagement with relevant government authorities. The unions, acknowledging the importance of dialogue, expressed optimism that their demands would receive the necessary attention from the federal government.

Comrade Benjamin Nnabue, the President of the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), stated that unions prefer negotiation over industrial action. He noted that while the issues may have been inherited, ensuring workers’ welfare remains a priority. Government policies, he added, must align with workers’ needs to sustain operational efficiency. Meanwhile, the Federal Ministry of Labour commended both parties for maintaining a constructive dialogue.

The signed agreement acknowledged that miscommunication had previously contributed to tensions between the unions and NiMet management. Both sides pledged to enhance communication channels and adopt proactive engagement strategies to avoid future misunderstandings. The unions, as a goodwill gesture, agreed to suspend the strike while awaiting further developments.

This resolution signals a step toward long-term industrial harmony within NiMet, fostering collaboration between management and employees. By prioritizing dialogue and structured negotiations, all parties reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening workplace relations and ensuring sustained operational efficiency.
