
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency will collaborate with the European Commission Humanitarian Office in disaster risk reduction. The partnership focuses on enhancing Nigeria’s preparedness and resilience.
Professor Charles Anosike, Director-General of NiMet, appreciated the EU’s interventions in Nigeria during a courtesy visit by DG-ECHO delegates.
He emphasized the benefits of the proposed partnership, stating, “The proposed partnership in disaster risk reduction is good for Nigeria. It aids our farmers and operators in other economic sectors.”
NiMet’s daily dissemination of weather and climate-related information, along with its collaboration with NIHSA, contributes significantly to disaster mitigation efforts.
Professor Anosike underscored the importance of awareness in disaster preparedness, noting, “When people are aware of extreme weather events, they prepare for it.”
Lisa De La Rubia, from the EU delegation, emphasized NiMet’s crucial role and potential partnership for disaster risk preparedness in Nigeria.
Senior members from NiMet and DG-ECHO, including Professor Vincent Weli, Charlotte Billoir, Comfort Agwu, and Sandie Romero Ruiz, attended.
The European Commission’s Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations department (DG ECHO) has provided humanitarian aid since its creation in 1992. Present in over 110 countries and reaching millions of people globally each year, the EU funds humanitarian assistance with UN agencies, international organizations, and NGOs.
