Prof. Charles Anosike, Director General and CEO of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), led the agency’s delegation to the 5th Network for Education and Research on Peace and Sustainability conference, widely known as NERPS, held from 4–7 March 2026 at the United Nations University headquarters in Tokyo, Japan.

The NERPS conference examined how technology can strengthen multilateral cooperation to advance peace, climate action and sustainable development.

The event opened with a welcome address by Tshilidzi Marwala, Rector of the United Nations University and UN Under-Secretary-General. Keynote speeches followed from Måns Nilsson, Executive Director of the Stockholm Environment Institute, and Rumiko Seya, President of Reach Alternatives (REALs).

NERPS Sessions Explore Climate Action and Global Cooperation

Throughout Network for Education and Research on Peace 2026, Prof. Anosike and the NiMet team participated in parallel sessions addressing climate action, disaster resilience, migration, climate change mitigation, sustainable peace and security.

Other discussions during education and peace event focused on sustainable agriculture and environmental sustainability on land and below water. Delegates also reviewed issues related to climate governance, urban resilience, equitable climate justice and transboundary resource management.

The sessions further examined advanced methods for monitoring and predicting environmental changes, reinforcing the importance of scientific collaboration within the NERPS global network.

Nigeria’s NiMet Strengthens Global Partnerships at NERPS

Participation in sessions enabled the NiMet delegation to exchange knowledge with international experts and institutions. The engagement strengthened partnerships and expanded collaboration opportunities on climate research and environmental monitoring.

Through its contributions at NERPS, NiMet also helped amplify Nigeria’s voice in global discussions on climate action and sustainable development.
