Michael Achimugu, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), has unequivocally dismissed baseless allegations against Najomo as “a desperate and baseless attempt to undermine his confirmation as substantive Director-General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).” The accusations, allegedly spearheaded by Kolade Hassan and Sy Mohammed, were described as a smear campaign orchestrated by individuals resistant to progress and motivated by self-interest. READ ALSO: Senate Considers Captain Najomo for Substantive DGCA Role

Capt. Chris Najomo’s impeccable leadership has been widely acknowledged, with Michael Achimugu highlighting his extensive contributions to Nigeria’s aviation industry spanning over four decades. Under his tenure as Acting DGCA since December 2023, the NCAA has achieved significant milestones in safety, efficiency, and operational excellence, solidifying its position as a key player in the global aviation sector.

Achimugu labeled claims that Capt. Najomo declared himself as substantive DGCA without formal approval as false and misleading. A video purportedly showing Najomo introducing himself as “Director-General” was clarified as a standard internal protocol, reflecting his current role without implying Senate confirmation. He emphasized that the confirmation process remains within the jurisdiction of the Honourable Minister, the President, and the National Assembly, and no evidence supports the allegations.

Safety Leadership and Unprecedented Achievements

Achimugu showcased Capt. Najomo’s commitment to safety leadership, citing the completion of the NCAA’s state-of-the-art Flight Data Centre, which has enhanced Nigeria’s aviation safety oversight. Since Najomo assumed office, no commercial aircraft accidents have been recorded, and measures addressing safety standards have significantly reduced risks.

Responding to criticism surrounding isolated runway excursions, Achimugu pointed out that such incidents are common globally and are not indicative of systemic failures. He drew comparisons to notable incidents, including a helicopter crash under the American FAA’s oversight and the tragic Kobe Bryant crash, emphasizing that aviation regulators worldwide face similar challenges. “The NCAA has maintained a robust safety record, and Nigeria does not rank among the top fifteen nations in air mishaps,” Achimugu noted. This commitment to excellence underscores why baseless allegations against Najomo cannot detract from his contributions to the sector.

Modernizing Customer Service and Resolving Complaints

Under Capt. Najomo’s administration, NCAA operations have been modernized, with an emphasis on consumer satisfaction and regulatory compliance. Achimugu highlighted that passenger refunds, which previously took months, are now resolved within weeks, in adherence to NCAA’s 14-day refund mandate. The launch of a consumer complaints portal and strengthened oversight mechanisms have further positioned the NCAA as a responsive and customer-focused authority.

“Capt. Najomo has prioritized ease of doing business while maintaining global standards, making the NCAA a more visible and effective institution,” Achimugu remarked. He credited Najomo’s leadership for fostering collaboration among industry stakeholders and ensuring swift resolution of consumer issues, further strengthening Nigeria’s aviation industry.

Industry Endorsements and Workforce Motivation

Capt. Najomo’s tenure has garnered support from aviation unions, operators, and stakeholders who applaud his transformational leadership. Achimugu emphasized his efforts to clear long-standing staff entitlements, creating a motivated workforce aligned with the authority’s objectives.

“This campaign to tarnish Capt. Najomo’s reputation represents the desperate actions of individuals clinging to outdated practices. His leadership exemplifies the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, driving accountability, excellence, and modernization across Nigeria’s aviation sector,” Achimugu asserted.

Remaining Focused Amid Distractions

Michael Achimugu reiterated that the NCAA remains committed to its mandate, undeterred by baseless allegations against Najomo from detractors. He reaffirmed that the confirmation of Capt. Najomo as substantive DGCA lies with the appropriate authorities and will not be influenced by unfounded claims.

“Our focus remains on delivering world-class service, ensuring safety, and promoting growth in Nigeria’s aviation sector. These distractions are nothing but the dying efforts of those resisting positive change,” Achimugu concluded.
