Nigeria’s aviation sector recorded a major boost at the ongoing Global Implementation Support Symposium (GISS) in Marrakech, as high-level engagements delivered strategic agreements and global partnerships. The Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, led discussions that focused on safety, workforce development, and international cooperation.
These engagements highlight Nigeria’s growing influence in global aviation policymaking. In addition, they reinforce the country’s commitment to aligning with international standards and improving sector performance.
GISS Engagement Strengthens Global Aviation Ties
During the GISS event, the Honourable Minister held a strategic meeting with the President of the ICAO Council, Toshiyuki Onuma. The meeting focused on expanding cooperation and strengthening Nigeria’s aviation framework.
Mr. Onuma commended Nigeria’s Civil Aviation Masterplan and acknowledged the Minister’s presentation on the future aviation workforce. He stated that ICAO remains committed to supporting Nigeria’s long-term aviation goals.
“ICAO reaffirms its strong commitment to deepening cooperation with Nigeria,” Mr. Onuma noted, highlighting support for capacity building and workforce development.
ICAO, EU Back Nigeria’s Aviation Reform Agenda
The Honourable Minister also engaged with leadership of the International Civil Aviation Organization and the European Union delegation. These discussions built on existing frameworks to expand technical cooperation and safety oversight.
Meanwhile, both parties explored opportunities for enhanced institutional collaboration and regulatory improvements. The European Union reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Nigeria’s aviation modernisation efforts.
The Honourable Minister welcomed the support, reiterating Nigeria’s alignment with global aviation standards. Therefore, these engagements are expected to accelerate reforms and strengthen the country’s aviation ecosystem.
Nigeria, Morocco Sign Landmark BASA Agreement At GISS
A key highlight of the GISS summit was the signing of a reviewed Bilateral Air Services Agreement between Nigeria and Morocco. This agreement establishes a modern framework for improved air connectivity and commercial cooperation.
The deal is expected to expand operational opportunities for airlines and airports in both countries. In addition, it strengthens regulatory collaboration and enhances efficiency across the aviation value chain.
“This landmark agreement represents a significant milestone in strengthening air transport relations,” the Honourable Minister stated during the signing ceremony.
Economic Growth, Connectivity Gains Expected
The BASA agreement goes beyond aviation by unlocking broader economic opportunities. It is expected to boost trade, tourism, and investment flows between Nigeria and Morocco.
Meanwhile, the agreement aligns with continental aviation priorities, including sustainability and safety. It also supports efforts to improve operational efficiency and environmental responsibility.
Therefore, the outcomes of GISS engagements position Nigeria for stronger global integration and long-term aviation growth.
Strategic Outlook for Nigeria’s Aviation Sector
The Honourable Minister emphasised that Nigeria remains committed to building a safe, secure, and sustainable aviation sector. He noted that partnerships formed at GISS will play a critical role in achieving this vision.
In addition, continued collaboration with global bodies will enhance workforce capacity and regulatory standards. These steps are essential for maintaining competitiveness in a rapidly evolving aviation landscape.
