Ethiopian Airlines marking 50 years' service into Kigali

Ethiopian Airlines Kigali service has marked a major milestone, celebrating 50 years since its inaugural flight to Rwanda in 1975. The airline, renowned as Africa’s largest network operator, continues to play a vital role in linking East African economies and promoting regional integration.

The airline first began operations between Addis Ababa and Kigali in 1975. Since then, it has expanded steadily, becoming a crucial bridge for passengers and freight. Today, Ethiopian Airlines operates 21 weekly passenger flights and three dedicated cargo services on the route.

According to Group Chief Executive Officer Ethiopian Airlines, the celebration reflects the airline’s strong commitment to African connectivity. He stated, “We are excited to reach such a milestone. Over 50 years of service to Kigali, we have expanded both our passenger and cargo operations, with increased frequencies for the benefit of our customers.”

Moreover, the airline offers seamless connections from Kigali through its Addis Ababa hub to over 145 global destinations across five continents. These efficient links support both business and tourism travel while enhancing Africa’s presence in global aviation.

As a strategic operator, Ethiopian Airlines contributes to regional development by narrowing connectivity gaps between African nations and key international markets. The carrier’s Kigali operations have helped boost bilateral trade and tourism, serving as a gateway for Rwanda’s integration into continental and global economies.

Additionally, the expansion of the cargo network from Kigali has allowed Rwandan exporters to reach markets faster and more reliably. This has been especially beneficial to the horticulture and pharmaceutical sectors, which require timely logistics.

The airline has also played a diplomatic role. By maintaining consistent services for five decades, it has reinforced trust and cooperation between Ethiopia and Rwanda. Officials from both countries have praised the airline’s role in strengthening bilateral ties over the years.

Ethiopian Airlines’ sustained growth on the Kigali route underlines its commitment to serve the African continent with efficiency and reliability. Its long-standing presence reflects a strategy that blends economic goals with regional solidarity.

In addition to economic and logistical roles, Ethiopian’s Kigali flights also support cultural exchange. They make it easier for citizens of both countries to explore shared history, art, and language, thereby building people-to-people relations.

Ethiopian Airlines Kigali service, therefore, stands as a testament to the airline’s legacy and forward-looking vision for African aviation. With this milestone, the airline renews its pledge to connect African cities and ensure sustained growth.
