Director General of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, Prof. Charles Anosike, emphasized the importance of Agricultural Systems Resilience and configuration and Climate Data Tool AWS configuration and CDT training. These initiatives will significantly enhance data availability and quality control by integrating station data with satellite data. This improvement is crucial for NiMet’s operations and overall weather monitoring.
Speaking at the training’s opening ceremony at NiMet’s headquarters on Tuesday, 9th July 2024, Prof. Anosike remarked, “The training aligns with NiMet Management’s commitment to ensure staff are skilled in modern weather and climate application tools.”
Furthermore, Prof. Anosike highlighted the Building AWS in Nigeria Project. This project, conducted in collaboration with Sahel Consulting, supports the government’s efforts to boost food security and provide early warnings. It aims to safeguard lives and property against climate threats.
“This training marks a significant milestone in enhancing the resilience of agricultural and food systems in Nigeria,” Prof. Anosike stated. He emphasized agriculture as the backbone of the economy, providing livelihoods and ensuring food security for millions. However, he noted challenges like climate change impacts, including erratic weather patterns and extreme weather events, threatening agricultural productivity and sustainability.
In conclusion, Prof. Anosike urged all participants to actively engage in the training. He encouraged them to transfer the AWS configuration and CDT training knowledge and skills acquired to their colleagues, enhancing NiMet’s overall capacity.
