The aviation sector is undergoing deliberate and structured development, not random progress, according to Director General, Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, Captain Chris Najomo. He made this clear during his address at the Nigerian Aviation Awards, stressing that reforms are driven by policy, leadership, and coordination.
He said, “These developments are not accidental. They are the product of deliberate policy direction, strong institutional collaboration, and visionary leadership.” Therefore, the industry’s trajectory reflects intentional planning rather than chance improvements.
Aviation sector growth driven by deliberate reforms
At the 15th NIGAV Awards, Captain Najomo outlined several key strides shaping the aviation sector. He emphasised that each milestone aligns with a broader national aviation strategy.
First, he highlighted progress in aircraft leasing frameworks. “We are witnessing significant strides from the consolidation of aircraft leasing frameworks,” he noted. This, however, is expected to improve airline capacity and reduce operational costs.
In addition, the certification of aerodromes remains a priority. He revealed, “We just certified a new airport, just three days ago.” This underscores ongoing compliance with global safety benchmarks set by bodies like International Civil Aviation Organization.
Meanwhile, infrastructure upgrades continue at major gateways such as Murtala Muhammed International Airport. These improvements aim to enhance passenger experience and operational efficiency.
Furthermore, intermodal connectivity is gaining attention. According to him, integration between transport systems will strengthen accessibility and boost economic activity linked to aviation.
He also pointed to fleet expansion and route development. “The gradual expansion of airline fleet and route networks” reflects renewed investor confidence and market recovery.
Policy direction and leadership shaping outcomes
Captain Najomo credited the Honourable Minister, Festus Keyamo, for driving reforms through what he described as “Transmodular Policies.”
He stated, “His unwavering commitment to reform, stakeholder engagement, and sectional growth continues to provide the enabling environment for regulatory excellence and industry expansion.” Therefore, leadership remains central to sustaining growth momentum.
In the same vein, he acknowledged subnational contributions. He praised Peter Mbah, saying recognition as aviation-supporting governor highlights the role of states in infrastructure development and connectivity.
NCAA’s regulatory mandate remains firm
Speaking on institutional responsibility, Captain Najomo reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority.
He said, “Our mandate remains clear to ensure the highest standards of safety, security, economic viability, and consumer protection in line with global best practices.” Consequently, regulatory oversight continues to anchor the aviation sector’s credibility.
He added that the recognition he received as Aviation CEO of the Year reflects collective effort. “I accept this honour not as a personal achievement, but as a reflection of the collective efforts of the dedicated management and staff of the NCAA.”
Industry recognition and sustained excellence
The DG commended the organisers for consistency and impact. He noted that the awards have become “a symbol of excellence, transparency… inspiring continuous improvement across all facets of our ecosystem.”
Meanwhile, the aviation sector continues to align with global standards promoted by organisations such as International Air Transport Association. This alignment strengthens Nigeria’s global aviation standing.
In conclusion, Captain Najomo reaffirmed that the sector’s progress is intentional. “This year’s theme… reflects a renewed trajectory… defined by resilience, reform, and resolve.”
