The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced a proposed temporary closure of the runway at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, for essential repairs and resurfacing.

The temporary closure is tentatively scheduled to begin on October 20, 2026, and last approximately 25 days, subject to final confirmation. FAAN said the intervention is necessary to address deterioration affecting sections of the runway, including potholes and extensive surface cracking worsened by recent heavy rainfall.

The authority said the planned works will involve pavement repairs, crack treatment and resurfacing of affected sections. According to FAAN, the project is intended to restore the runway to a safer operational condition ahead of the expected increase in passenger and flight traffic during the Christmas season.

Temporary closure to support runway rehabilitation

FAAN said the repairs will also include an extension of the runway. The expansion is expected to enable Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport to accommodate wide-body aircraft as traffic to the region continues to grow.

The authority said the planned expansion is also aimed at improving passenger comfort and supporting a more seamless travel experience. Therefore, the project combines immediate runway rehabilitation with longer-term capacity improvements at the Owerri airport.

The proposed temporary closure means passengers planning to use the airport during the affected period may need to adjust their travel arrangements. FAAN has consequently advised travellers to maintain contact with their respective airlines for updates on flight schedules and possible alternative arrangements.

FAAN said the October 20 commencement date remains tentative pending final confirmation. The authority will continue engaging airlines and other relevant stakeholders before announcing the confirmed closure and reopening dates.

The Director, Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, said the authority would communicate further details as the process progresses. The announcement is expected to provide passengers and airlines with adequate notice to plan around the planned runway works.

Meanwhile, the planned intervention comes as airports across Nigeria face the need to maintain critical infrastructure while managing growing passenger demand.

FAAN said the Owerri project will address the immediate deterioration while preparing the airport for increased traffic. The runway extension is also expected to support the airport’s ability to handle larger aircraft in the future.

For passengers, however, the most immediate concern will be how airlines respond during the closure period. Travellers are therefore advised to confirm their flight status directly with their airlines before heading to the airport.

SMICA Runway Works Follow Wider Airport Development

The proposed temporary closure comes amid a broader programme of infrastructure development at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport. The airport has undergone improvements aimed at strengthening its operational capacity and supporting regional connectivity. In May 2025, the airport recorded its first international flight operations, following a reported overhaul of its runway and other facilities.

The development marked an important milestone for Owerri and the wider South-East region. It enabled eligible international pilgrimage flights to depart directly from the airport, reducing the need for some travellers to use other departure points. The milestone also highlighted the airport’s growing role in connecting the region to international destinations.

Runway Extension Targets Larger Aircraft

In a separate infrastructure development, the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation reported in July 2026 that the runway extension project had reached its final phase. The project aims to increase the runway length from 2,700 metres to 3,200 metres, allowing the airport to accommodate wide-body aircraft. The expansion is also expected to support future commercial and cargo operations.

Meanwhile, FAAN also urged airport users to cooperate as the works are carried out. It said the project forms part of its continued commitment to safe, efficient and reliable airport operations.

The proposed temporary closure is expected to affect operations for about 25 days if the schedule is confirmed. FAAN’s final announcement will determine the exact closure and reopening dates.

Travellers can follow further aviation developments and updates through NigerianFLIGHTDECK, while official airport information should be checked through the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).

FAAN said it appreciates the understanding and cooperation of passengers, airlines and other airport users while the essential works are undertaken. The authority is expected to provide additional information once the closure arrangements are finalized.
