Skyway Aviation Handling Company (SAHCO) PLC has launched a pilot programme with the acquisition of Evac+Chair emergency evacuation equipment. The move makes SAHCO the first and only aviation ground handling company in Nigeria to deploy the specialised mobility equipment.
The investment strengthens the company’s ability to provide safe, dignified and efficient assistance to passengers with reduced mobility. It also reinforces SAHCO’s commitment to innovation, safety and inclusive service delivery across Nigeria’s aviation sector.
The Evac+Chair, recognised globally as a leading stairway evacuation chair since 1982, is designed to safely move passengers with reduced mobility. It can be used during emergencies or when passengers need assistance navigating stairways.
Using an advanced gravity and friction control system, the Evac+Chair can safely ascend and descend stairs without requiring heavy lifting. Therefore, the equipment reduces physical strain on operators while supporting safety and comfort for passengers.
With secure harnesses, durable rubber track systems and an ergonomic design, the equipment enables trained personnel to assist passengers unable to move independently. This makes aircraft boarding, disembarkation and emergency evacuation more efficient and seamless.
The Evac+Chair acquisition underscores SAHCO’s commitment to ensuring every passenger receives safe, dignified and world-class ground handling services. This applies regardless of physical ability or mobility challenges.
Speaking on the development on behalf of Chairman, Dr Barr. Taiwo Afolabi CON, Managing Director/CEO Mrs Adenike Aboderin said the investment reflects the company’s commitment to serving every passenger.
“At SAHCO, we believe that air travel should be accessible, safe and comfortable for everyone. This investment demonstrates our commitment to inclusive service delivery by ensuring that passengers with reduced mobility receive the highest level of care, dignity and professional assistance.”
She added that the company would continue investing in modern equipment and innovative solutions. According to her, such investments improve safety, operational efficiency and customer experience.
Evac+Chair Strengthens Inclusive Aviation Services
The acquisition also strengthens SAHCO’s position as a preferred ground handling partner for airlines operating into Nigeria. Meanwhile, the company said it remains committed to maintaining international best practices across its operations.
The latest investment follows another major equipment acquisition by SAHCO in 2025. The company became the first and only aviation ground handling company in Nigeria to acquire the Rapiscan Itemiser 5X.
The Itemiser 5X is an advanced Explosive Trace Detection (ETD) technology. It is widely recognised and recommended by the United States Transportation Security Administration (TSA) for its security screening capabilities.
The equipment features an optimised detection library capable of identifying a wide range of explosives and narcotics. In addition, the technology represents a significant advancement in aviation security screening.
SAHCO said it has consistently invested in state-of-the-art ground support equipment, advanced technology and continuous staff development. The company also highlighted its commitment to internationally recognised safety standards.
These investments, it said, enhance passenger experience while supporting efficient, reliable and safe ground handling services. They also improve aircraft turnaround times and help deliver seamless operations for airline partners.
With the latest Evac+Chair investment, SAHCO is further positioning itself as an aviation ground handling company focused on safety, accessibility and operational excellence. The initiative also supports a more inclusive passenger experience for travellers requiring additional mobility assistance.
SAHCO operates across all commercially operated airports in Nigeria, according to the company. Its nationwide footprint gives airline partners greater flexibility when expanding route networks and launching services to new destinations.
Therefore, the company said airlines can extend their operations while receiving consistent standards of safety, efficiency and customer service. This nationwide presence further strengthens SAHCO’s position as a ground handling partner for airlines seeking reliable and scalable solutions in Nigeria.
