SITA OptiFlight® is central to new efficiency gains at ITA Airways, as the airline targets measurable fuel and emissions reductions. Through OptiFlight, the Italian flag carrier projects savings of more than 7,100 tonnes of fuel and over 22,100 tonnes of CO₂ across 2025 and 2026. These figures place SITA’s technology at the centre of a broader industry shift towards data-driven operational performance.

Meanwhile, the deployment reflects growing reliance on digital tools to address rising fuel costs and environmental pressure. According to SITA, OptiFlight is now active across the airline’s fleet, focusing on optimising climb performance rather than broader flight phases.

How OptiFlight Works in Practice

OptiFlight calculates the most efficient climb profile for each flight. It adjusts airspeed, altitude transitions, acceleration, and climb Mach using predictive analytics. In addition, it integrates machine learning models and 4D weather data to refine outputs across different aircraft types.

The system applies tail-specific modelling, meaning each aircraft receives tailored optimisation based on operational and environmental conditions. Therefore, OptiFlight aims to reduce inefficiencies that typically occur during climb, one of the most fuel-intensive phases of flight.

However, while the technology promises efficiency gains, its real impact depends on consistent operational use and integration into airline procedures.

Tech and Industry Pressure on Fuel Costs

OptiFlight arrives at a time when airlines face increasing cost and regulatory pressure. Fuel remains one of the largest operational expenses globally, while emissions targets continue to tighten.

According to International Air Transport Association, fuel efficiency and emissions reduction are now central to airline strategy. Therefore, tools like OptiFlight are being positioned as part of a wider shift rather than standalone solutions.

The ITA Airways deployment highlights how carriers are turning to incremental efficiencies rather than waiting for long-term fleet or fuel transitions.

Airline and Developer Perspectives on OptiFlight

Chief Innovation and Strategic Projects/Vision, ITA Airways, Francesco Presicce, said:

“At ITA Airways, we know that innovative technologies are key to delivering our long-term growth and sustainability strategy. The deployment of SITA OptiFlight demonstrates our commitment to equipping the company with innovative, practical, and measurable tools, while ensuring operational excellence. Data-driven insights and artificial intelligence allow us to achieve significant fuel-saving and emissions reductions without compromising efficiency or safety. This initiative is part of our broader commitment to more sustainable and responsible aviation, and we are proud to be at the forefront of this journey”.

Meanwhile, CEO of SITA for Aircraft, Yann Cabaret, added:

“The aviation industry faces the urgent challenge of reducing emissions while maintaining operational efficiency. ITA Airways’ decision to implement SITA’s technology is a testament to how harnessing the power of data can have a measurable impact. Fuel consumption is one of the biggest hurdles for airlines facing increasing regulatory and environmental pressures, and with it being one of the biggest costs in day-to-day operations, the need for intelligent solutions has never been greater. By using real-time data and predictive modeling, SITA OptiFlight will allow ITA Airways to reduce fuel burn and emissions while maintaining optimal flight performance. This collaboration shows how digital transformation is fundamental to aviation sustainability.”

What OptiFlight Means Beyond One Airline

OptiFlight represents a growing trend in aviation, where marginal gains are aggregated into significant cost and emissions savings. However, its effectiveness will depend on broader adoption, operational discipline, and integration with other efficiency measures.

For now, ITA Airways’ projections offer a measurable case study. Whether OptiFlight delivers consistent results across different fleets and regions remains a key question for the industry.
