The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has highlighted flight delays and cancellations statistics, urging airlines to improve operational efficiency and passenger care. Recent data revealed that in September and October 2024, a total of 10,804 flights were operated, with 5,225 experiencing delays and 190 cancellations. These figures expose significant challenges in maintaining reliability across Nigeria’s aviation sector.

In September 2024, airlines operated 5,291 domestic flights, of which 2,434 faced delays, while 79 were canceled. October saw a further deterioration, with 5,513 flights recorded, 2,791 delayed, and 111 canceled. Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting in Lagos, NCAA Acting Director-General Captain Chris Najomo said, “While operational and weather-related challenges contribute to disruptions, poor management compounds passenger dissatisfaction and erodes trust in our aviation sector.”
Emphasis on Passenger Rights
Captain Najomo stressed compliance with the Nigeria Civil Aviation Consumer Protection Regulations, 2023, which compel airlines to inform passengers of schedule changes promptly. These regulations also mandate accommodations, refreshments, or compensation for disruptions exceeding acceptable limits. “Flight delays and cancellations statistics like this demand immediate action. Captain Najomo also addressed the increasing issue of unruly passenger behavior. “Passenger rights come with responsibilities,” he noted, emphasizing collaboration with airlines to enforce penalties for misconduct. FAAN Managing Director Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku added that mobile courts would soon be established to handle airport offenses swiftly. She highlighted recent operational upgrades, including night landing facilities, which aim to ease scheduling constraints and reduce delays.

Air Peace Chairman Allen Onyema stressed the importance of public education to address passenger frustration and ensure respect for airline staff and facilities. “Unruly behavior damages assets and creates unsafe environments. Stricter enforcement of regulations is crucial,” Onyema stated.
