Air Peace, Nigeria’s largest carrier, has hailed the UK Government for supporting its approval to operate scheduled flights into London Heathrow and Gatwick. The airline described this achievement as a historic milestone for Nigerian aviation, linking it to strong bilateral cooperation.

Chairman of Air Peace, Dr. Allen Onyema said this breakthrough is remarkable because no Nigerian carrier had secured similar access in the past seven years. He stressed that the UK Government provided crucial support, alongside the airline’s resilience.

Dr. Onyema praised British Deputy High Commissioner for Lagos, Jonny Baxter, describing him as “a diplomat par excellence” who demonstrated fairness and unwavering commitment.

“Jonny Baxter embodies the principle of live and let live. He gave us every support needed to commence our UK operations,” Onyema said. “Because of his efforts and the open-mindedness of the UK authorities, Air Peace’s problem is no longer the UK. The UK loves Air Peace, and Air Peace loves the UK in return.”

The airline boss revealed that the invitation from the UK Government to commence London Heathrow flights came as a pleasant surprise.

He disclosed that Heathrow Airport even offered to host Air Peace with a welcome party to celebrate the launch.

He added, “The UK Government even requested that we forward names of those attending so they could make necessary arrangements. This shows the extent of their support, and we are profoundly grateful to the UK Government, the Civil Aviation Authorities, and the people of the UK for the remarkable hospitality extended to Air Peace.”

Dr. Onyema emphasized that the milestone was not just about his airline but also about strengthening ties between Nigeria and the United Kingdom. He described the approval as proof of shared respect and mutual progress.

“Both countries have come a long way, and this is how it ought to be, a true partnership of respect and shared progress,” he remarked. He also commended Jonny Baxter again for making the process seamless.

The airline’s new Abuja–London Gatwick and Heathrow flights will provide major relief for Northern Nigerian travelers. Dr. Onyema explained that Abuja passengers prefer not to transit through Lagos for international connections.

“These new direct flights will remove that burden and serve their needs conveniently,” he said. “I therefore urge senators, high commissioners, and the entire Abuja community to patronize Air Peace exclusively for flights to London Heathrow.”

He further urged Nigerian leaders to show patriotism by supporting indigenous carriers.

“Our airlines offer competitive fares and seamless service. Supporting them means strengthening Nigeria’s economy and projecting national pride,” he concluded.

This landmark achievement cements Air Peace’s role as Nigeria’s flag carrier of choice, dedicated to expanding connectivity, strengthening bilateral ties, and showcasing Nigerian hospitality on the global stage.
