The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has launched its Strategic Plan 2026-2030, signalling a major shift in performance delivery. The Strategic Plan sets a clear roadmap to enhance weather and climate services nationwide. Meanwhile, the initiative aligns with national priorities on safety, aviation efficiency and climate resilience across sectors.
Speaking in Abuja, Director-General/CEO, Professor Charles Anosike, said the Strategic Plan builds on NiMet’s over 140-year legacy. He explained that the framework strengthens the agency’s mandate to safeguard lives and property. In addition, he noted that the plan positions NiMet as a leader in performance-driven public service delivery.
Professor Charles Anosike further stated that the Strategic Plan adopts a Balanced Scorecard approach for measurable outcomes. He revealed that NiMet aims to become the first aviation-sector institution in Nigeria to fully institutionalise this system. Therefore, the agency will drive results through five pillars, including employee growth, partnerships, innovation, service delivery and revenue diversification.
The launch also reflects alignment with the Federal Government’s results-based governance framework. This framework is coordinated by the Central Results Delivery Coordination Unit (CRDCU) under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. Meanwhile, the Strategic Plan supports performance monitoring through a Presidential Performance Bond and results-based budgeting system across Ministries, Departments and Agencies.
At the event, Managing Consultant/CEO, Kayode Sufianu of Balanced Scorecard West Africa, commended NiMet’s adoption of the framework. He highlighted that the Strategic Plan translates institutional goals into measurable performance indicators. In addition, he stressed that it improves accountability across stakeholders, finances, internal processes and organisational capacity.
Furthermore, the Director-General unveiled NiMet’s refreshed core values under the acronym I-PACE. These values include Integrity, Professionalism, Accountability, Commitment and Excellence. However, he emphasised that the success of the Strategic Plan depends on consistent implementation and staff commitment at all levels.
The Strategic Plan is expected to improve service delivery in aviation meteorology and climate monitoring. It will also enhance collaboration with stakeholders across agriculture, disaster management and transport sectors. Therefore, the roadmap reinforces NiMet’s role in supporting national development and economic stability.
