South African Airways Team B has emerged winner of the Aviation Cup Africa Tournament following two days of spirited competition. The golfing event, held at the Ikeja Golf Club, brought together top players from aviation organisations across Africa for what many describe as the continent’s premier recreational aviation gathering.
Sunday Ali and Eze Emmanuel, representing South African Airways Team B, secured the top spot in the team category. They posted a combined net score of 295 to claim the victory at this year’s fourth edition of the tournament.
Making a strong comeback this year, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) claimed both the second and third positions in the fiercely contested team event. The solid performance by FAAN teams underlined the authority’s renewed commitment to fostering wellness and recreation among its staff.
The tournament, described as the first aviation-themed golf event on the continent to feature Boeing as a host, also enjoyed support from notable partners. These included the Aviation Africa Summit, AFBAA, and major industry brands. Participating teams came from Aero Contractors, Uganda Airlines, Ibom Air, ExecuJet, Q-Impact Aviation Medic, Etam Avitat, 7Star Global Hangar and others.
In the women’s singles category, Ruth Luwoye emerged winner. Playing off a handicap of 22, she delivered a gross score of 88 and a net score of 66, sealing her position at the top. Aniekan Essienette and Imelda Aba, both from Ibom Air, followed closely in second and third places, showcasing the rising profile of female golfers within the sector.
The men’s singles had its own competitive highlights. Twelve-handicap golfer Ben Onwe stood out with a gross score of 75 and a net score of 66, securing the top individual honour. Joseph Anasiudu followed with a net score of 69. He edged past Mike Olaleye, who also scored 69, through countback to claim second place.
Beyond the tournament rounds, the Aviation Cup Africa Tournament also featured a vibrant social event known as Aviation Night. Held at the upper pavilion of Ikeja Golf Club, the gathering brought together both golfers and non-golfers from across the aviation industry. Attendees enjoyed an evening of networking, camaraderie, banter and celebration, all in a relaxed atmosphere away from the intensity of regular industry summits and exhibitions.
Industry professionals from ground handling, airline operations, MROs, cabin and cockpit crew, travel services, and fuel suppliers turned up for the event. The footfall reflected the strong desire among industry stakeholders to prioritise health and social engagement through sports.
One of the evening’s key highlights was the presentation of star-rating certificates to aviation brands that have consistently participated in the tournament across its four editions. Sabre Travel Solutions, a global distribution system (GDS) company, was recognised with a 4-star rating for its consistent involvement and commitment.
South African Airways and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria each earned a 3-star recognition, while Ibom Air, Etam Avitat and 7Star Global Hangar were honoured with 2-star ratings respectively. The star certification system is aimed at promoting long-term participation and sustained interest in recreational activities within the aviation sector.
Sponsors and partners also took the stage during Aviation Night, affirming their dedication to the tournament’s continued growth. They praised the organisers and acknowledged the unique networking platform the event has become.
Chief Executive Officer of Diplomacy Publishing & Events, Sòókò Deji Ajomale-McWord, spoke to journalists during the conclusion of the event. He expressed heartfelt appreciation to all who supported the initiative since its humble beginnings.
“We are particularly overwhelmed in an elating way, with accolades and positive reviews that have been pouring in. We are grateful to God and everyone who has been part of this journey from its cradle days,” he stated.
He further explained that the tournament, which started with less than 10 aviation golfers, has now grown into a unifying annual recreational tradition for the industry. According to him, it goes beyond sport—it is a call to wellness, fellowship, and identity among professionals.
As the curtains fell on this year’s edition, participants departed with trophies, recognitions and lasting memories. The weekend was not just about golf but about growing the community of aviation professionals who bond through recreation.
With another successful edition wrapped up, attention now shifts to the planning of the fifth tournament. Organisers and sponsors have already hinted at a bigger and more inclusive event next year.
