The Nigerian aviation and journalism community is in mourning following the passing of Mrs. Shola Oluremi Adekola, who died on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, at Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja. She was 61. Her unwavering commitment to truth defined her legacy.

A seasoned journalist and dedicated aviation correspondent, Mrs. Adekola served as Assistant Business and Aviation Editor for the Nigerian Tribune, one of the country’s oldest newspapers. She passed away after a brief illness, leaving behind an indelible mark on the industry she passionately served.

Born into the esteemed Omole family, she was the daughter of the late Professor Morakinyo Omole and Mrs. Funmilayo Omole. She spent her formative years within the University of Ibadan community, where she later earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Classical Studies in 1988.

Fondly called “Madam Sholly” by colleagues and friends, Mrs. Adekola furthered her professional expertise at the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT), Zaria. Between 1993 and 2023, she undertook multiple specialized courses in aviation journalism and management, solidifying her reputation as a leading voice in the sector.

Her career took her across Europe, America, the Middle East, and Africa, where she participated in various aviation and tourism conferences. Her insightful perspectives found expression in her widely read column, Crucial Moment, a staple of the Tribune’s business pages every Thursday.

Mrs. Adekola’s journey in journalism began with the Kano State Government-owned Triumph newspaper, which assigned her to the aviation beat in 1993. Over the years, she contributed her expertise to several media houses, including Hallmark, Daily Times, Reuters, and finally the Nigerian Tribune, where she rose through the ranks to become Assistant Business and Aviation Editor.

A respected member of the League of Airports and Aviation Correspondents (LAAC) since 1993, she played a pivotal role in the association, serving at different times as Assistant Secretary, Secretary, and Vice Chairman.

Beyond her professional achievements, Mrs. Adekola was a devoted mother and family woman. She is survived by her two children and loved ones, who now mourn the loss of a remarkable woman whose impact will not be forgotten.

Shola Adekola’s passing is a profound loss to journalism, aviation reporting, and those privileged to have known her. She will be remembered for her dedication, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to truth and excellence.
