practical trainingThe Nigerian Aviation Fire and Safety Association (NAFSA) has welcomed a new decision by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to approve four weeks of practical training for airport firefighters.

The development follows earlier concerns raised by the association over a proposed online training format. NAFSA had rejected the plan, arguing that it weakened essential practical training standards required for aviation firefighting operations.

The union had earlier opposed the proposed four-week E-learning Initial Firefighters Course, which was to be followed by two weeks of practical sessions. According to the association, the structure fell short of internationally accepted firefighting standards and could weaken operational readiness.

However, discussions between FAAN management and NAFSA have now produced a compromise. The duration of practical training has been increased from two weeks to four weeks, giving firefighters more time for drills and instructor interaction.

NAFSA National President, Comrade Ugbeikwu Sunday Ugbeikwu, confirmed the development while speaking to journalists in Lagos. He explained that the association’s agitation focused mainly on improving practical training opportunities for firefighters.

According to him, the new arrangement addresses the concerns raised during the earlier protest against the E-learning model.

“The major goal of the agitation has been achieved,” Comrade Ugbeikwu said. “Firefighters will now have sufficient time to meet physically with their instructors during the four weeks of practical training.”

He noted that the extended practical training period would allow trainees to engage fully in drills, simulations, and operational exercises required for airport rescue and firefighting duties.

Practical training seen as critical for firefighters

Comrade Ugbeikwu emphasised that hands-on experience remains the backbone of aviation firefighting instruction. Therefore, the additional weeks of practical training will improve competence and confidence among trainees.

He said the earlier E-learning component raised concerns about effectiveness. However, the new four-week practical training schedule now compensates for those limitations.

“With four weeks of practical training, firefighters will gain better exposure to operational drills and emergency response procedures,” he added.

He also explained that the training would ensure that participants acquire the necessary skills required for airport rescue and firefighting operations across Nigerian airports.

According to him, the revised training structure would enable trainees to develop the competence required before being recognised as qualified firefighters.

Meanwhile, Comrade Ugbeikwu commended the Managing Director and Chief Executive of FAAN, Mrs Olubunmi Kuku, for her constructive engagement on the issue.

He appreciated the authority’s willingness to review the programme and support improved practical training standards within the aviation fire service.

The NAFSA President described the decision as far-reaching and robust, noting that it reflects FAAN’s commitment to aviation safety.

He added that the association remains satisfied with the outcome and will continue supporting FAAN’s safety initiatives.

In addition, Comrade Ugbeikwu encouraged firefighters to prepare for the demanding nature of their profession.

He explained that firefighting remains a high-risk occupation characterised by dangerous working environments and exposure to hazardous materials.

“The firefighting job is a precarious one,” he said. “Where others are running away from danger, firefighters are expected to run towards it.”

Therefore, he urged firefighters to remain disciplined and committed to continuous practical training and professional development.

Comrade Ugbeikwu also appreciated firefighters across FAAN airports for supporting the association during discussions with the authority.

He reaffirmed that NAFSA will continue advocating improved training standards and stronger safety culture in Nigeria’s aviation fire service.

According to him, the association will deepen collaboration with FAAN and other aviation stakeholders to improve firefighting capability nationwide.

He added that the move aligns with the provisions of the NAFSA Constitution of 1998, which mandates the association to promote and uplift aviation firefighting standards across the country.
