The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has renewed its Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Lagos (UNILAG) to facilitate the deployment of metallurgical laboratory equipment at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja. This agreement, initially signed in 2018, aims to enhance academic capabilities and strengthen collaboration between the two institutions.

NSIB Director-General, Capt. Alex Badeh Jr., renewed the MoU with UNILAG Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola after logistical challenges had previously delayed its implementation. NSIB will fast-track the deployment of metallurgical laboratory equipment to UNILAG, addressing the need for its relocation for teaching and research.

During the signing ceremony at the UNILAG Senate Building, Capt. Badeh stated, “The initial MoU was signed in 2018, but there was no follow-through due to logistical reasons. Over time, there were meetings between NSIB and UNILAG, but we didn’t make much progress. When I took over, I saw the lack of movement and initiated this renewal.”

He added, “UNILAG’s expertise will help us fully utilize our currently underused equipment.” Collaboration is the most practical solution. In two weeks, professors from UNILAG will visit Abuja to update their previous assessment of the equipment’s needs. We’ll then share ideas and move the process forward.”

The NSIB DG further highlighted the need for funding to support this collaboration, explaining, “Both the university and NSIB require resources, and we’ll work together to secure them. For instance, we often send engine parts abroad for analysis, and we’re currently sending something to Kenya. With this partnership, we can perform such tasks locally.”

UNILAG Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, emphasized the university’s commitment to advancing the MoU for enhancing teaching and research. She stated, “We are intentional in ensuring that our research is demand-driven, and this collaboration will benefit NSIB and the university.” Prof. Ogunsola highlighted that the collaboration would propel Nigeria forward by providing solutions for local challenges through academic expertise.

Additionally, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Prof. Samson Adeosun, urged NSIB to expedite relocating the equipment. He mentioned that doing so would eliminate the need to send samples from Lagos to Kaduna for analysis. He added, “This collaboration will benefit the aviation industry, the nation, and increase the laboratory’s rating.”

The renewed MoU represents a significant step toward advancing research, education, and aviation safety in Nigeria. Both NSIB and UNILAG are committed to ensuring the success of this partnership for mutual benefit and the country’s development.
