The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has announced progress in its investigation of the recent aircraft incident in Ilorin. NSIB recovers data card from the Diamond aircraft that crash-landed on May 23, 2025, at General Tunde Idiagbon International Airport.

The Diamond training aircraft operated by International Aviation College (IAC), encountered issues during a simulated instrument approach. The incident occurred at 17:28 local time on Runway 05, and involved two persons onboard, both of whom survived.

Director, Public Affairs and Family Assistance, Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau, Mrs. Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, confirmed that investigators swiftly deployed to the scene. They have begun on-site data gathering and initial assessment, which is ongoing.

Director General, Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau, Captain Alex Badeh Jr., visited the crash site the following day, May 24, 2025. He assessed the aircraft’s condition and monitored the commencement of field investigations.

“Our investigators are on ground and have begun work in earnest. The damaged aircraft is positioned on the left side of the runway, and recovery operations are nearly complete. Four of our specialists will remain at the site to complete critical measurements before returning to Abuja,” stated Captain Badeh Jr.

He confirmed the aircraft’s data card was intact and has been retrieved. The data card, a vital tool for investigation, will now undergo detailed analysis at the NSIB’s transport safety laboratory. This process will contribute to identifying the cause of the crash.

He explained further, “Our job is to determine what happened, to whom it happened, how it happened, and most importantly, how to prevent it from happening again.”

The NSIB disclosed that a preliminary report would be published within 30 days, following global standards for transparency in accident investigations.

Additionally, the Director General assured the public of the safety of Nigerian airspace. He also gave an update on the condition of the aircraft’s occupants. “They are conscious, coherent, and in stable condition,” he said.

One of the occupants underwent an MRI scan, and both are receiving appropriate medical attention. No fatalities were recorded, and no further injuries were reported on the ground.

As the NSIB recovers data card, it reiterated its commitment to a thorough process and promised to provide timely updates. This aligns with its goal of improving aviation safety across Nigeria.
