The NSIB investigates NG Eagle Airlines flight N2 902 operated by an XeJet Airlines Embraer 145 that skidded off Runway 18L/36R. NSIB’s initial findings revealed that aircraft 5N-BZZ suffered damage to both main landing gear tires.
The aircraft, carrying 49 passengers and 3 crew members, was on a scheduled flight from Abuja to Lagos. Departing Abuja at 11:10 a.m., the flight maintained a cruising altitude at Flight Level 280. After a 50-minute hold in Lagos due to weather conditions, the aircraft was cleared for landing. It touched down on Runway 18 Left (18L) and veered off the runway to the left.
The aircraft came to a stop on the grass verge approximately 326 meters from the threshold of Runway 36R.
Captain Alex Badeh Jr., NSIB’s Director General, stated that the ongoing investigation aims to identify factors contributing to the runway overrun. He further explained, “Our investigators have interviewed the captain, senior first officer, and purser. Toxicology tests conducted on the crew yielded negative results for all tests. NSIB investigates NG Eagle.
Captain Alex Badeh Jr. noted that they retrieved the Flight Data Recorder and Cockpit Voice Recorder, which are currently undergoing analysis.
NSIB’s investigation will cover various aspects including the airworthiness of the aircraft, operational policies, human factors, and weather conditions. Furthermore, it will evaluate the crew’s health and mental condition, aircraft maintenance records, and any prior incidents related to this aircraft’s landing gear system.
In accordance with international aviation safety protocols, NSIB will release a preliminary report summarizing basic fact-finding within 30 days. A final report with safety recommendations will follow at the conclusion of the investigation.
