The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) reports that Dana Air flight 9J0352 (5N-BKI) veered off the runway due to landing gear and directional control issues after landing. This is the initial finding following the airline’s runway excursion incident.

According to Mrs. Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at NSIB, the investigation team has retrieved flight data and cockpit voice recorders for analysis.

“It had been raining, causing the runway 18L surface to be wet. The aircraft’s landing gear and directional control issues caused it to veer off the runway left.

Captain Alex Badeh Jr., NSIB Director General, confirmed the dispatch of a go-team to the incident site to conduct inquiries and gather relevant data.

“We have started an investigation into the circumstances of the Dana Airline MD-82 runway excursion,” said Captain Alex Badeh Jr., NSIB Director General.

“A go-team has been dispatched to the incident scene and has initiated inquiries. We will leave no stone unturned in examining all aspects surrounding the incident.”

The investigation team retrieved the Air Traffic Control transcript for forensic analysis and further investigation.

Crew members have participated in interviews and toxicology tests. Additionally, all stakeholders, including the manufacturer, are being notified for their input in our report.

NSIB will investigate aircraft airworthiness, operational policies, human factors, weather, and crew health and mental status. Also, aircraft maintenance records, and any previous incidents involving this aircraft’s landing gear system.

NSIB has stated that a preliminary report summarizing basic fact-finding will be released within 30 days. A final report with safety recommendations will follow the investigation’s conclusion.
