The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has suspended Assistant Superintendent of Immigration II (ASI 2), Okpravero C. Ufuoma for airport misconduct. Ufuoma, stationed at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, appeared in a viral video soliciting financial gratification from a traveler.
This video, titled “This is how Immigration officers treat tourists in Nigeria,” has sparked public outrage.
The NIS stated that Ufuoma’s actions do not reflect their values or ethics. In a statement, Comptroller General of Immigration, Kemi Nandap, condemned the misconduct. “The NIS condemns this airport misconduct in the strongest terms,” Nandap said. “It undermines the ongoing reforms aimed at enhancing our service standards. This disgraceful act is not representative of our commitment to hospitality, reception, and courtesy.”
The NIS is installing electronic gates (e-gates) at all international airports to improve passenger travel. This measure also aims to prevent incidents like the one involving Ufuoma. “Nandap added, ‘We remind the public that e-gates will facilitate smoother travel for all passengers, particularly Nigerians.’”
“The disciplinary procedures have indefinitely suspended Ufuoma, following the law and Public Service Rules.”
The NIS remains committed to its Zero-Tolerance for Corruption policy and to removing corrupt elements from its ranks.
Meanwhile, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, Managing Director/Chief Executive of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), criticized Ufuoma’s behavior.
“She described it as unacceptable and, furthermore, not reflective of the passenger experience FAAN strives to provide. Consequently, ‘The officer in question has been immediately withdrawn from duty at the terminal and is facing disciplinary action with the NIS,’ Kuku stated.
Additionally, Kuku encouraged travelers to report any similar airport misconduct. ‘I would like to ask all passengers to report any such incidents or, alternatively, seek immediate support through the provided phone numbers and QR codes,’ she said. ‘Your safety and comfort are our top priorities, and thus, we will ensure a pleasant travel experience for everyone.’”
