NIS Launches Digital Tools to Fight Corruption

After a successful six-month pilot phase processing over 50,000 applications, the platform has been hailed as a game-changer. The application also processed the document with a 98% satisfaction rate.

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has unveiled groundbreaking digital initiatives to combat corruption and enhance service delivery. Comptroller General of Immigration Service (CGIS) Kemi Nandap announced these including the Integrated Border Management System (IBMS) during the 3rd Nationwide Sensitization and Awareness Campaign Against Corruption 2025. The event, attended by government agencies, private sector leaders, and international partners, marked a significant step in modernizing Nigeria’s immigration system.

A statement signed by ACI AS Akinlabi, Service Public Relations Officer, Nigeria Immigration Service Headquarters, Abuja revealed this.

Integrated Border Management System (IBMS):

The NIS introduced the Integrated Border Management System (IBMS), a centralized platform integrating real-time data from airports, land borders, and seaports. This system aims to streamline coordination among security agencies, reduce human interference, and ensure faster traveler clearance. CGIS Nandap stated, “The IBMS will bolster border security and eliminate opportunities for extortion and bribery.”

Blockchain-based Document Verification Platform:

A Blockchain-based Document Verification Platform was also launched to verify passports, visas, and other travel documents. Leveraging blockchain’s immutable nature, the platform will curb fake documents and identity fraud. “Every NIS-issued document will be tamper-proof and easily verifiable,” Nandap explained.

E-Visa Channel Goes Live:

The NIS officially launched its e-Visa channel, allowing travelers to apply for visas entirely online. After a successful six-month pilot phase processing over 50,000 applications, the platform has been hailed as a game-changer. The application also processed the document with a 98% satisfaction rate. Princess Zahrah Mustapha Audu of the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC) praised the initiative, calling it “a testament to Nigeria’s commitment to attracting foreign investment.”

Strengthening Partnerships for a Corruption-Free System:

The NIS emphasized its collaboration with anti-corruption agencies and private sector stakeholders. Mrs. Nnena Akajemeli of SERVICOM noted, “Technology is a game-changer in the fight against corruption.” Mr. Demola Bakare of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) stressed the need for continuous staff training to ensure effective implementation.

Public Reaction and Future Plans:

Stakeholders and the public applauded the initiatives. A Nigerian Association of Travel Agencies (NANTA) representative described them as “a new dawn for Nigeria’s immigration system.” The NIS also plans to expand its Contactless Passport Application System nationwide by 2025, ensuring faster and more efficient services for all Nigerians.

CGIS Nandap reiterated the NIS’s commitment to leveraging technology for national development. “Our goal is to build an efficient, transparent immigration system that Nigerians can be proud of,” she said.

The event was attended by high-ranking officials, including AA. Sanusi, representing the Director-General of the Department of State Services. Also present was DCG A.V. Benson, representing the Comptroller General of the Correctional Service. Georgina Umaru attended on behalf of the Director-General of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons. Gregory A. Itotoh represented the Comptroller General of the Customs Service. Ambassador SM Goni was there for the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency. ACG MB Ogar represented the Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps. AIG US Nadada attended on behalf of the Inspector General of the Nigeria Police Force. These dignitaries expressed strong support for the NIS’s initiatives. They also pledged to collaborate closely to ensure the campaign’s success.

The event concluded with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the NIS and partner agencies, solidifying their resolve to combat corruption and deliver world-class services.
