The NiMet ENACTS initiative has been launched to revolutionise access to climate data in Nigeria with support from global partners.
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), in collaboration with Sahel Consulting, the International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRI), and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, unveiled the Enhancing National Climate Services (ENACTS) programme in Abuja at a two-day event under the Building Agricultural Systems Resilience in Nigeria Project.
The event also featured a Project Review Workshop with stakeholders drawn from agriculture, health, water resources, blue economy, and disaster management, who discussed practical steps to integrate climate data into decision-making.
A major highlight of the launch was the introduction of NiMet’s Maproom portal, an online tool that provides more than 40 years of high-resolution climate data at a 4km grid.
The Maproom offers easy-to-use features that help users visualise rainfall, drought, temperature, and seasonal variations.
It is expected to enable evidence-based planning, strengthen resilience, and improve Nigeria’s preparedness for climate shocks.
In his keynote speech, the Director-General of NiMet, Professor Charles Anosike, described the NiMet ENACTS initiative as the presentation of a vision brought to life through consistency, partnership, and shared commitment to national development.
He emphasised that the Maproom portal is a transformative step in making climate information accessible, relevant, and actionable for all Nigerians.
Professor Anosike further explained that while the Maproom has broad application across the economy, agriculture will benefit the most.
He noted that the initiative directly aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises food and nutrition security.
Farmers, he added, will now have access to detailed information on rainfall patterns, drought risks, temperature forecasts, and dry spell alerts.
This will help them make climate-smart farming choices, reduce crop losses, and increase yields.
Beyond agriculture, the data will also support better planning in water resources, public health, and disaster risk management.
Stakeholders who attended the workshop reviewed milestones and expressed optimism about ENACTS.
They agreed that it will strengthen national resilience, improve early warning systems, and promote innovation across climate-sensitive industries.
By closing Nigeria’s climate information gap, the NiMet ENACTS initiative is expected to reinforce the agency’s position as a leading provider of meteorological services in Africa.
It also advances the Federal Government’s broader goals of food security and sustainable development.
The launch also demonstrated the value of partnership between local agencies and international organisations.
With Sahel Consulting, IRI, and the Gates Foundation providing support, Nigeria now has a strong platform to deliver reliable, evidence-based climate services to its citizens, businesses, and policymakers.
This collaboration represents a new era where climate science drives more effective development policies.
For Nigeria, the NiMet ENACTS initiative is more than a technical upgrade. It is a strategic step toward building climate resilience and protecting livelihoods.
As Professor Anosike noted, consistent investment in climate services ensures national preparedness against climate-related disasters while safeguarding the country’s future.
The Abuja launch is therefore seen as a turning point in Nigeria’s approach to managing climate risks.
With the Maproom portal now active and widely accessible, NiMet is positioned to help farmers, industries, and government agencies integrate data-driven insights into decision-making, reinforcing the nation’s ability to adapt and thrive in a changing climate.
