The Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Prof. Charles Anosike, says the partnership with CARE Nigeria, part of CARE USA, will help the agency reach the last mile and other users who need its weather and climate data. NiMet CARE Nigeria partnership underscores the significance of this collaboration.

Prof. Anosike spoke while hosting the Country Director of CARE Nigeria, Dr. Hussaini Abdu, and his team in Abuja on Tuesday, 18th February 2025.

“What we do is critical for disaster response. We partner with state governors through the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) and other organizations to disseminate weather and climate information. Partnering with CARE, a key player in the humanitarian sector, will help us reach end users more effectively. We deal with perishable products, so timely information for farmers and other users is vital,” Prof. Anosike said.

He noted that climate change and global conflicts are worsening humanitarian crises. “We must discuss these issues and integrate climate-informed decision-making into poverty reduction strategies. Climate crises displace communities, increase forced labor, and worsen human trafficking. Using weather and climate data for better decision-making is crucial for sustainable development,” he added.

Dr. Abdu thanked NiMet for the opportunity to explore areas of collaboration.

“CARE Nigeria is the country office of CARE USA, founded in 1945 to support people in crisis. We operate in over 120 countries, including Nigeria. CARE Nigeria started in 2017, initially responding to the Northeast crisis but later expanding its interventions. Our two major mandates include continuing humanitarian response and deepening development programs,” Dr. Abdu explained.

He emphasized climate change as a growing concern, especially in Nigeria’s Northeast. “NiMet’s work is crucial. We support smallholder farmers and promote climate-smart agriculture. Partnering with NiMet will enhance climate-related discussions and support advocacy for climate-friendly policies,” Dr. Abdu said.

Both organizations agreed to formalize the partnership by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU).
