Today, the ICAO Council appointed Juan Carlos Salazar for a second three-year term as Secretary General. Since his appointment in August 2021, the ICAO Secretariat has undergone a significant transformation, marking a new era for the UN agency.
His tenure was renewed during the Council’s 2nd meeting of the 231st session, the new tenure commences from 1st August 2024.
Salazar expressed gratitude for the support received during his first term, emphasizing achievements in people, culture, and digital transformation. He highlighted the collective efforts that established a strong foundation for the future.
ICAO Council President Salvatore Sciacchitano expressed pleasure in supporting Salazar’s crucial work, particularly in fostering innovation amid unprecedented challenges in the aviation sector.
“The ICAO Council is very pleased to support Mr. Salazar as he continues his crucial work, ensuring that the Organization is able to help foster innovation across the aviation ecosystem at a time when air transport is facing unprecedented challenges,” noted ICAO Council President Salvatore Sciacchitano. “Transforming ICAO to allow the Organization to enhance its standardization, strategic policy, and capacity building activities is critical to assuring a sustainable, resilient, safe and secure future for the global aviation sector.”
Salazar, an expert in aviation law and policy, brings nearly 30 years of experience in international negotiations to his role. Before becoming Secretary General, he served as Director General of Civil Aviation of Colombia, overseeing a complex organization with over 3,100 employees. Holding master’s degrees in public administration and air and space law, Salazar is fluent in Spanish, English, French, and Arabic.
