The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced the temporary closure of Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport (SLAA), Ibadan. This decision is due to ongoing upgrade works aimed at improving the airport’s facilities. The closure aligns with international safety standards and regulations set by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).

Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mrs. Obiageli Orah, confirmed the development. She stated that the closure is necessary to ensure the safety of passengers and airport personnel. The Nigeria Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has also closed the runway 05R / 23L, and airport operations. This move is part of efforts to meet global aviation safety standards.

The upgrade is part of the Oyo State Government’s initiative to transform Ibadan Airport. The goal is to elevate it from a domestic to an international airport. Various remodeling and improvement works are currently underway. These include upgrading runways, terminals, and other critical infrastructure.

FAAN has appealed to airport users and stakeholders for understanding and cooperation. The authority emphasized that the temporary closure is for safety and long-term benefits. Once completed, the upgrades will enhance the airport’s capacity and service quality.

The closure highlights FAAN’s commitment to maintaining high safety standards. It also reflects the government’s dedication to improving Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure. The upgrade aligns with global best practices and aims to boost economic activities in the region.

Mrs. Orah reiterated that the temporary closure is a necessary step. It ensures that all upgrade works are completed without compromising safety. FAAN remains committed to providing world-class airport facilities for passengers and stakeholders.

The upgrade project is expected to bring significant benefits to Oyo State and Nigeria. It will attract more international flights and boost tourism and trade. The improved facilities will also enhance the overall passenger experience.
